Sub X-over question

I have a question how would you correctly/properly set up a sub and see if it's any good.
Because in the retail stores here in canada, they seem to crank everything up so that it sounds as "boomy/loud" as possible so i can't really test which subs are good.
I appreciate any recommendations through email or this forum,
Thanks for the help.

P.S.: Any one know of a good sub at around $300US or cheaper?

i own both the 350 and the 650. both are great subs, but it really comes down to what price range you are looking at and how big your room is.

i've got my 350 hooked up here at my dorm and it is more than enough for the small room. back at home, my 650 is on active duty. i mainly bought the 650 to match my rm7500's, but i've determined that the bass coming from it is much tighter and more detailed than the 350.

polk makes a great sub, but you don't have to limit your search to just one brand. velodyne makes a great sub and they're competitively priced with the polks. like everyone else here always says, let your ears decide... good luck!

In store, not much you can do. At home you just have to fool with it until you find the right spot...

Lots of good subs out there, I still say for the price, you can't beat a Paradigm sub. Of all the subs that I have listened to, it is the most musical. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the replies troy and mjk, do you have any specific models to consider? I don't want to exceed the $350US level as I am only a college student.
My room is about 16'x13' and I've got thick carpeting.
The audio equipement thet'll accompony the sub is:

    Front: RT600i's
    Center: CS245i
Rear: RT10's (i went cheap but still decent)
A/V Receiver: Harman Kardon AVR210 (good for the price)

And again thanks for the help and let the replies coming in. :)

would a paradigm be your top choice for a HT set-up as well?

Mine works quite well in HT applications. My theory for the most part is that if it works with music it will work with HT.

Paradigm has 2 different lines, I have the basic PDR-10 (10") and I love it. I bought it for 299, I believe. For the price, I think the Paradigm is every bit as good as the Velodyne CT series.

    Check out the website: http://www.paradigm.ca

    hey troy,
did u buy it here in Canada? if so, where?

Thanks, I auditioned the PSB subsonic 5 and it was a great sub and the price was $300US on the dot but I don't where to get or audition the paradigm sub. All the HT specialty shops here are considered high end and they sell all subs above $400US and that's a little too much.

Actually, I am in Charleston, SC. Paradigm is a Canadian company though. I believe that thier website will has a dealer locator listing.

If the local hifi shops prove to be too expensive, you could always try ebay.

I would say, roughly, 18' x 25' or so. I have mine in a corner out about a foot from the wall behind a piano.

hey dude, check out audioreview.com if you're checking out subs. I bought a Sony SAW40 after reading the reviews from consumers who uses the products from all audio businesses. The Sony sub was only $150 but god, does it produce! Check out the reviews for the Sony SAW40, Velodyne is good as well though cost more. The Hsu Research sub was also highly recommended but the price paid for the Sony was such a bargain and out of 243 consumers who tested the Sony sub rated it a 4.6 out of 5. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
