RTi70 2-way or 3-way?

I haven't been able to figure this out, maybe someone knows.

All the literature only says the RTi70 has 2 "woofers" and 1 tweeter, so is that a 2-way design or does it just use the same size speaker (6.5") for both the bass and midbass/midrange (like Wharfedale and some others) and therefore a 3-way design?

I'm considering getting either the RTi70 or the 150, but I want a 3-way design. Also considering the Infinity Alpha 40 (or 50.. YUMM but too pricey), Warfedale Diamond 8.4 and maybe CSW TowerII (the rest of the system is CSW Newtons, Mc300, S300 and Subcube 8").

    Welcome to the forum :)

    The RTi70 is a 2-Way.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Both woofers play below 2.1 khz. They are a 2 way design split between 3 drivers!

If you like bass, in any way. Do not buy the Infinity

Well, it's been a while since I've compared them side by side, but last time I checked both Polk and Infinity speakers totally blew away any crap from BOSE .. so I'm sorry but I have to take anything you say with grain of salt.

Sorry I was reading that on my Palm, it tends to mash everything together.

What is wrong with the Infinity's bass? The Alpha 50 has twin 8" woofers. While I haven't listened to them myself yet, I would tend to think that kind of setup would have far more bass than any 6.5" design.

I'm going later today to audition them all, including the Wharfedale, luckily there is a dealer only a 35 min drive away hehe.. those things are hard to find. Got to say, the prices on the Polks at Circuit City may just clinch it for me though...

Well you would think the Infinity Entra's or w/e with Dual 6.5" mid-bass could have bass better than the RTi28, but it just dosn't happen.

Did you guys know that one of the CC's near me is selling a pair of their Infinty Alhpa 40's for ONLY $161 each???? If I had the money, I definitely would have gotten them. I'm sorry, but that price is just amazing.

I was talking about the Alphas, not Entas which are a lower-end line.

I'm a big fan of larger cones. There's no replacement for displacement as they say. 8" is already on the small side, but 2x 8" can work in a HT as long as you have a good sub.

I'm skeptical of any 6.5" design, although 3x 6.5 woofers in a 3-way design could provide some good mid-bass, talking 100-300hz range here, and with a good sub to fill in the real bass, might sound good.

The price is right on Polks right now that's for sure. The Alpha 50's go for $1000/pair! Then again I can get the CSW towers for $400/pair on ebay (refurb, with full warranty). Those have 2 x 8" woofers, 5.25" mid and 1" tweeter and would match my other CSW's probably better. They aren't as good as the Polk's though.

Hm, seems the Alpha 40's have disappeared from the CC website as well, wonder if they are phasing them out also? That is a killer price on the 40's considering they retail for $800/pr!

Think I will go see what my local CC has..

Well they had 3 RTi150's left for $257 each, so I walked out with a pair :) Black, wish they had cherry though, it does look sweet. Got the 12-mo no-interest credit card. $9,000 limit lol... should have tossed in a widescren plasma on my way out!

I listened to the RTi70s, they also sounded great, I thought the bass was actually better than on the 150s, but that doesn't seem possible, the reciever they were using probably couldn't drive them well, so I will reserve judgment until after I try them in my own setup for a while. It's not the greatest, Onkyo 575, 70w/ch but it does have surprising power for it's size, like most Onkyo in my experience, and I will bi-wire them.

Also auditioned the Infinity Alpha 40s - oh man, NO comparison, the Polks blew them away in every regard. The salesman said the Alpha 40's are also discontinued, but not discounted yet. Same situation as the RTi70s, they were both still $399/ea - so the 150 deal was quite a no-brainer. :)

That Onkyo will not push those 150's.. take my word, I have an Integra 100 watts per channel and it can't do it. The 150's have leaps and bounds more bass then the 70's.. easily. The CC i demo'd my 150's made the 150's sound less then when i got home with them, 257.00 each not a bad price..... was that for new?

Yes they are brand new. The sticker price was $269 I think, they were actually cheaper.

Unfortunately I have to listen at low to moderate volume levels. I live in an apartment and the walls are very thin. I think the reciever will serve me well for now, maybe when I move into a larger place I can think about replacing it. Right now my main concern was replacing the horrible L/R fronts I had before, I was never satisfied with the music performance of this system. The 150's are probably a lot more speaker than I need right now, but that's ok! :)

I wish they made like a "RTi120", a 3-way speaker with 1 or 2 6.5" woofers, 1 6.5" mid, and the tweeter. I don't know what they were thinking with that RTi100.. seems like you'd be better off with a pair of i38 bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer..
