I was given a Xbox 360 by a friend. Can I hook it up to my AVR for surround sound?

TIA

Yes. If it's one of the older models that has the hard drive mounted on one side of it and no HDMI port, you just need the HD cable adapter that has a TOSLINK connector for surround. If it's a newer white one with HDMI but you can't run the surround via HDMI, there should be an adapter for that too. Which 360 is it?
    Equipment list:
    Onkyo TX-NR3010 9.2 AVR
    Emotiva XPA-3 amp
Polk RTi70 mains, CSi40 center, RTi38 surrounds, RTi28 rears and heights
SVS 20-39CS+ subwoofer powered by Crown XLS1500
    Oppo BDP-93 Blu-ray player
    DarbeeVision DVP5000 video processor
    Epson 8500UB 1080p projector

Not everyone has an AVR with HDMI ins. It is possible to run HDMI for video to the display and optical to the AVR. Still, we need to know which 360 he has.

It's black and was made last year. It does have a hdmi port and it appears to have an optical port. Model 1439.

The yeah... Either run HDMI from it to your AVR or use the optical port, then go to console settings and set audio to 5.1.

And once you get it working. Put in battlefield BC2 and crank it up. I love it!
