Better celebrate while sales of the format is on an upswing

As we all remember, it was 29 years ago today when Sony Japan unleashed the Compact Disc upon music consumers.

From wikipedia....
The first album to be released on CD was Billy Joel's 52nd Street, that reached the market alongside Sony's CD player CDP-101 on October 1, 1982 in Japan.

Yep, I was a latecomer...for several years the only CD I knew about involved $$$ and int rate. When I bought my first disc I thought it was great to hear a complete album w/o getting up to turn over the lp or flip the cassette.
Yep, my name really is Bob.

My first two cd's I bought were in 1989 soon after I bought my crs+. One was Jackson 5's greatest hits, the other 60's surf. My wife was cleaning out our cd collection to burn onto our hard drive when she pulled out the 60's surf cd. It was in perfect condition after all these years and still sounds pretty good. I put it into a safer place.

Bobby Bowden used to come into the music store I worked in Tallahassee. He would always buy the $3 easy listening cassette tapes. One day I tried to no avail talk him into upgrading to a CD setup. He only wanted the easy listening and big band tapes, and because the quality was still good he saw no reason to go to CD. Although he wouldn't be considered an audiophile, I wonder if he had some crazy awesome system just to listen to those cassette tapes. He knew what he wanted and did not deviate to get it. In some ways that is one level of an audiophile. Cassette tapes have a certain sound to it just as CD's and vinyl do.

I can't believe it's been 29 years. My first thought on cd's is that it would be a quickly fading fad. I was wrong. Disco was the quickly fading fad at that time.

My first cassette 'Walkman" was Akai. It had three little EQ slides. I stupidly let someone borrow it and it came back broken. It was the best sounding portable cassette player I have ever heard. The CD player I think was Sony. It didn't last too long either for the same reason. I don't lend out electronics any more.

First album I bought on CD was Guns and Roses Appetite for Destruction back in 87'. Great album. First CD player was a Sharp. Cost an arm and a leg. I was 14 and had to cut a ton of grass to get that sucker.

About a year later I upgraded my system to all Adcom components and Klipsch Heresy speakers. I also had a pair of Monitor 7's at the time.

I still have that Sharp CD player and the album but everything else is long gone.

The Beatles "Abbey Road"(1983)was my first, (wish I had never opened that one)and a Sony CDP101 was my first player. Today however, I realize the error of my ways, and for the most part, the CD can rot in hell for all I care. SACD on the other hand is still ok in my book, but not nearly as involving and musical as the good ole' LP.

I kept all my Vinyl thank goodness. They haven't been used until recently after I upgraded my speakers, got an old Marantz and now my world of music opened back up. I am cleaning my records now as my sister did not take care of them while I was away. I find myself darting into old record stores now trying to find good deals.

CD's are great for convenience but vinyl can't be beat.
