PSW303 Hookup/Settings

My PSW350 subwoofer recently was hit by lightning, and Polk is sending a replacement (PSW303). I have pulled up the instructions for setting up, and here are my questions. I am new at this and really don't understand too much about crossovers, etc., so, here it goes:
First, here is my system:
Yamaha V661 receiver
Polk RM3000 speakers, Front, Center, Surround (very old speakers, but still work)
PSW 303 (when I receive it in a few days--I want to be ready)
1-According to the instructions, it says with the small speakers that I should connect the receiver directly to the subwoofer inputs, then connect the front speakers to the speaker level outputs from the subwoofer. My question is, is this the best setup? I had my PSW350 connected directly to my receiver with a single cable from my receiver sub-out jack, but never thought my speakers had enough bass. Could this be why?
2-If I connect the new subwoofer the way they recommend, they say I need to set my receiver to "no sub" and the front speakers to large. Does this sound right? And what, if any, settings do I need to set (i.e., crossover, etc.) in my receiver and on the back of the subwoofer? Help!!! Thanks!!!

What you are describing is also known as speaker-level output connection. I currently use this with the PSW110 that I have, and it's still valid for the PSW303.
1. It's the best connection if the single cable (LFE cable method) did not produce enough bass from the subwoofer. Try both connections (if the subwoofer allows both connections)--using one connection type then disconnect and try the other connection type--and see which is best. For some receivers the subwoofer output is very low, therefore requiring a high subwoofer channel volume just to get acceptable bass at a modest volume with the single cable method--for these receivers the speaker level connection works better. Main drawback is no separate LFE just getting sent to the sub, if it matters.
2. Yes, Front has to be set to Large to bypass the receiver's bass management/crossover system, and Subwoofer has be set to No. Use the subwoofer's Low Pass dial to blend the bass of the front speakers with the subwoofer, the front speakers themselves will be run full range if the subwoofer does not have a high pass filter for the front speakers. -
Just received my new sub and hooked it up running the speakers directly into the sub outputs and the receiver into the sub inputs. I also changed my speaker settings as recommended. So far, I am pleased. I probably will experiment by tweaking it a little, but I think overall this is the best way to connect. Thanks for the help.
