*Small* surround speakers to pair with Monitor 60s...

Hey everyone. As I'm sure you hear often around here - it's my first post, so.. Hi!

I'm building my first home theater setup and I'm looking for some advice for setting up some relatively unobtrusive surround speakers in an odd shaped room. I can post pictures of the room later on so that you guys can get a better idea of what I'm working with. Basically anything set up in the typical surround location will either be right in someone's ear or in the middle of a walkway.

First, my setup so far:

Front - Monitor 60
Center - CS1
Receiver - Yamaha RX-V467

As you can see, I basically have an entry level theater started. I'm not looking for the best of the best or anything, just something that will match nicely with my current setup, both in sound quality and price. This system will mainly be used for movies and occasionally music, but never anything at very high volume and I don't require out-of-this-world quality.

What I need is a pair of small (satellite?) surround speakers that I can mount on stands and possibly even move easily when not in use. I'm basically thinking small-ish and light-ish so that they don't require a solid 4 x 4 post to rest on. lol. I feel that I could probably cannibalize a HTIB and steal the rear speakers and be okay with the sound, but then again they're only sold as kits and not individually to the best of my knowledge.

I realize that the Monitor 30s would be an ideal match for the rest of my inexpensive setup, but they're large and heavy and the stands they'll require will also be large and heavy. With the layout of the room, anything other than a thin stand with a small speaker will be completely in the way.

Now, here's the catch: I'm currently in the middle of a lease-purchase and until I decide to buy the house, I can't mount anything to the walls. That cuts out a lot of options.

Would anyone care to point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

-Mike

    Monitor 30's would be perfect.

edit: missed the bottom part about them being too big, sorry.

    1. Buy the house
    2. Get the 30's and mount with keyhole.

Now you're a home owner and have a nice surround setup! Congrats!

You'll never get a monitor in their ear, better get earbuds.

I just made some four ft stands for my 30's to use as "wides". Quite a small foot print actually, four foot 2x2 with a 16"x10" base and a 9"x8" top. The speaker sets beautifully on top and the stands are in the corners of the room to either side of the flat panel.

I drove a big fat 3.5" wood screw through the center of the base up into the 2x2 post and anchored it with three skinnier 2.5 wood screws.

I did the same for my 40's used as surrounds with 3 foot 2"x2" posts. The bases are a bit larger to stabilize the additional weight of the 40's but again, a fairly small foot print without using large obtrusive stands.

Splif hit it: Monitor 30's mounted on the wall using a keyhole.

You don't need to drill into any joists, the 30's aren't that heavy. Drywall will do (unless you plan on doing chinups using the speakers ).
