Would I be moving diagonally or even downgrading my system if I got an HK HK PA5800 that's only rated at 80x5 vs the the 135w on the Onkyo?

i bought this one on CL for $130 to power my Rti8s system. in term of power, if your Onkyo is a AVR, then 135WPC of that rating would be the same or less than this 80 WPC amp when all channels are driven. Your 135WPC AVR is probably rated for 2 channels at higher THD. The PA5800 has a 73 amps(very high current), .05%THD with all channels driven.

Until recently I scored the HK signature 2.1 with 100WPC, 100 amps for $200 to power my other set of RTi12s system. I am bi-amping my Rti12s now and using the 5th channel for the center. Denon AVR 3806 drives 2 Fxi3 surround speakers. You may want to test this config to see if you like it more.

I would stay where you are until you can afford a real step up. The Onk is a nice piece but I do prefer the HK sound to the Onk sound.

And nhhiep said, The PA5800 has a 73 amps(very high current), .05%THD with all channels driven.

So dynamically the sound is better with the HK than the Onkyo.

I picked up the PA5800 earlier this month and despite its modest power claims, it really is a beast of an amp. My receiver is also 130 watts per channel but it just can't keep up with the HK. If the price is right, I say go for it.

if you can get a good condition unit for $150 or less, then go for it. worse case, you can always sell it back for the same price on CL. Otherwise, wait for something better, your current AVR should be good enough. the move isn't that big
