I've been playing around with the sequels for a little while now... I spent around 10 hours cleaning them up, including showering the panels. After the cleaning, I was still lacking mids from one panel, highs from another. I decided to take the panels apart to clean them better and see what I could see.... big mistake lol

While I had it apart, I decided to wipe it down to see how dirty it was... even after the hour long shower, it took six paper towels to get it reasonably clean. Black crap covered all the paper towels, finally I got it to the point where it was just gray.

In any event, the damage was done and I was mad at myself... so I called ML up and ordered 2 new stators to the tune of $725

Are you supposed to give them a shower? I haven't a clue about cleaning those but I don't know if I'd stick them in the bath.
And from charged panels, I guess you might get a lot of static cling which might attract a lot of dust to them.

yeah, showering them is common. It's a sticky on the ML forum. I can tell you that it isn't enough though. Before the shower, they were black, like visibly black. After, they looked clean, but obviously weren't. They should make the panels serviceable... it would be nice to be able to wipe them down

Yes, I would think that enough crud on them would change the response they deliver.
Too bad you could not just have replaced the Plastic-like material and be done with it.
ML should make that available for owners that are able to repair them.

its actually not the mylar that goes bad... it's the conductive coating (though the mylar can stretch, I'm told, and this can usually be fixed with a hair dryer). there are some places that recoat panels. EslRepair offered to do it for high 200's. They said that if they damaged the mylar in the process, they would have to replace it and that would be nearly 500. They also said that they couldn't make it exactly to ML spec if they did damage it.

I figured it wasn't worth the hassle. With the new ones, you get ML's new style panels (they made some upgrades apparently), which are powder coated and all that. They also some with a warranty. I figured that was worth it. Honestly, though, I don't know if I will even keep the speakers. My goal for the ML's was to see how they sound, and to see if I like ESL's... if I don't, they have to go... and I figured if I replaced the panels with ML's, I might get back what I have in if I choose to sell them.
