I also am new to the site and looking for help/insight/recommendations for what I plan to have as my set up. I know this is a budget set up, but just want something simple and effective for my girlfriend and I to use(we aren't audiophiles or to picky, but we would like something decent/good quality that would last). I already have 2 Monitor 30 Bookshelf speakers but I plan to get:
2 Monitor 50 Floor Speakers
1 CS1 Center Channel
1 Pioneer VSX-520-K
1 PSW10 Sub
Will this all work? Should I go with the Monitor 40's since I have a sub? I am pretty novice with the lingo and the specs. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks!

My apologizes for my typing this(I have been up way to long today) I have the pair of Monitor 30's and the Sub already so what I plan to buy is actually:
2 Monitor 50 Floor Speakers or Monitor 40 (if more recommended)
1 CS1 Center Channel
1 Pioneer VSX-520-K -
the 50's and the 40's are essentially the same except the 50's are floorstanders. I would recommend getting the cs2 over the cs1, it is worth the few extra dollars IMO. Maybe save up for a better sub such as the psw505, the psw10 tends to be a bit muddy and boomy.Music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.

^^^ Yes, a CS2 is just a little bit more and worth it.
Hang on to those Monitor 30's. Love those things.
The PSW505 is an excellent budget sub. Newegg has them for $199, FREE shipping. (that $199 is with a $30 off coupon they list on their site).

I knew they were roughly the same aside from 50's being floor stands. But I was really wondering is if I have a separate powered Sub do I need to get the 50's since I read they were slightly bassier than the 40's or would buying 40's be sufficient since I already have a separate powered sub. -
If you have room for towers step up to the 60/70's for the froms leave the 30's rear, CS2 for center and add the sub---if budget is a conflict build one piece at a time...you'll be happier in the long run....my .022-channel: Modwright KWI-200 Integrated, Dynaudio C1-II Signatures

I was kinda of thinking something like this, I am really tempted since newegg has all of these speakers on sale. Getting 60's and putting the 30's in the back with a cs2 for the center. How about the receiver, I know it is pretty entry level, but would be sufficient? -
First of all Newegg is the only Polk monitor carrier...and they have random sales monthly if not weekly, so don't worry about the sales. As for receivers most here are Pioneer fans but don't leave out Onkyo, Harmon Kardon, Yahmaha if you like it on the bright side...find the features you want Google around and search this forum....but most important of all go shopping where you can get your ears on some gear and then shop for the best deal....take your time its a journey and an ment you have to live with

I have pretty much the same exact setup you're talking about. I think you should go for the m60's at least. I think they're worth the extra $20 over the 50's when newegg has them on sale.
I started with 40's and cs2 in front with 30's in rear. Within 2 weeks I picked up the 60's. Not that the 40's were bad in front. For me with 80% tv/movie and 20% xbox gaming.
I liked the look of the 60 floor standers vs the 40's on stands. And since when is bigger not better?
Love my cs2. Does great for dialogue in tv and movies. That thing really gets a workout.
It really all depends on how deep you want to get into it and how much real estate you have to work with. Can't go wrong really.Pn51D550

Well I was under pressure to buy them since newegg had them all on sale. But since txcoastal said newegg almost always has them on sale I will buy the CS2 now and use my Monitor 30's until the Monitor 60/70 go back on sale to pick them up. Then maybe I will spring for a new sub, but I am kind of fond of my current one.
Any input on the receiver?
Thank you all for the suggestions and insight. Really really useful information. -
I have an onkyo TX-NR808 and like it alot. You can get a pretty good deal on a refub onkyo's from accessories 4 less. They come with a year warrenty but you can purchase a 3 year extened warrenty for $44 or a 5 year for $69.
The TX-NRxx8's are last years models. The newer ones are TX-NRxx9's. The newer ones according to home theater's review shows they dont drop off near as bad in power as the older 8's. The 9's also have 4k upscaling. They are also have wireless internet where as the 8's have to have a cat 5 ethernet cable.
The TX-NR709 would be a good one. It is the new modle year and it has amplifier pre outs. The TX-NR609 doesn't have preouts. The TX-NR809 has a higher wattage rating and different 4k upscaling.
