i want to upgrade my power and i know someone selling a yamaha MX-830 power amp...its 170wpc and has 3 sets of outputs.

i have 3 sets of sda's..sda 1c, sda 2 and sda crs....

would it be a good idea to connect these all to the MX-830 and use one of my yamaha receivers as a preamp?

and what do you think is a good price for the MX-830?...its in perfect condition.

thanks

Don't run more than one pair at a time.

Yammy's are decent and have decent power, nothing too special but better than a reciever.

Because the amp probably won't drive more than one pair at a time without shutting down. Plus, on those Yammys the speaker terminals are in parallel so the more you use, the less available power there is.

You could probably run more than one pair at lower volumes, but once you start listening to dynamic material at higher volumes the load of more than one pair of speakers will shut the amp down.

I am curious as to why you are running all 3 sets at once? Is this for a Home Theater set-up? If that's the case, then a multiple channel amp or a seperate amp for each channel is the route to go.

i use them for both music listening and home theater....i dont always use all of them. depending on what im listening to and how im feeling at that particular moment i may decide to listen to any combination of speakers and volumes....thats why i currently use 1 receiver per set of speakers....but the sda 1c's and at least the sda 2's could use higher quality and more power.

Are you using all those Yamahas as pre-amps or just powering SDAs with them? And do your SDAs still have the SL silver dome tweeters in them. Because that combo could make those highs a little hard to bare.

while my setup is a little bit of transition right now, the current setup has 1 yamaha running the sda 1c's and 1 yamaha running both the sda 2's and the sda crs's.

i believe they all have the sl2000's....the highs on the sda 2's are definitely bright...the crs's are hard to judge at the moment cause im waiting on the interconnect cable to arrive (should be here today or monday)...the sda 1c's sound fantastic...i mean they all sound great.
one way i compensate for the really bright sda 2's is by bringing them down in the mix...the warmer sda 1c's and my velodyne sub do a pretty good job of rounding off the sharpness...but when i finally decide to take on my first modding/upgrading project, the tweeters on the sda 2's are first on the list.

Yamaha MX amps are very good, and will go down to 2 ohms easily. The 830 will surely drive your SDA's...I can't think of how they couldn't.
