I just purchased a nice 1961 Akai 1720-W Reel to Reel, but the on-board speakers leave a bit to be desired in that they are just single cone.

I'm looking for a nice quality pair of 2-way (or 3-way) speakers to squeeze a bit more sound out of it.

Speakers must be 8-ohm as the output transistors in this unit can't handle 4-ohm speakers.

I know someone has to have some take-outs lying around collecting dust from a car they upgraded.

This might be harder than it seems since I think just about every aftermarket 4x6 for car audio would be 4 ohm, Not sure about the basic OEM speakers, but I believe many of the better OEM systems have varied impedences for each driver.

From what I can tell, you are correct; almost all new 4x6 systems are 4-ohm.

I may have to go to an auto recycler and look through some older cars.

I guess I could just add a 12 watt Mills 4-ohm resistor in series to a 4-ohm speaker to present 8-ohms to the amp?

Another option would be to make a 4x6 plate, cut a 4" hole in the middle, and run a 4" round full range 8 ohm in them.
Tang Band and Dayton Audio makes some decent 4" 8ohm full range speakers to name a couple.

I did it in the dash of a Chevy S10 that had 4x6 holes in the dash.
I bought some adapters and used 4" round JL Audio speakers in those locations.

That's a good idea, and maybe I don't have the right take on this, but my thought was that a 2-way speaker would sound better than a full-range speaker.

Actually, the single-cone full-range 4X6 Akai labelled speakers in the unit are very good.

I just thought high frequencies would sound better coming out of a 1" tweeter versus a 4" round or 4X6" oval single-cone driver.

Well, I just confirmed the speakers in the 1720 are 5X7's instead of 4X6's.

There's enough room in there I might just enlarge the hole and toss in a Polk MW and an RDO-198 on each side
