    I know, I know, I have three out of four pc's on 7, still needing to jump the newest member up from xp to 7. Now soon they will have 8, which is a giant app/wallet sucker.
    Time to go get a Mac maybe, next time around. Maybe they are trying to boost the economy ?

    Why M$ is just now getting on the bandwagon is beyond me, they're about 3 years late to the game.

    I'm going to download 8 and play with it, and I'm sure there are improvements over the other options on the market, but at this point its going to need to be pretty damn spectacular.

    Windows 8 will be for both desktops and tablets, so that's a major plus comparing to iOS and Android. Sorry but your Mac won't be the most popular choice for corporate America or the average users out there.

    I didn't say it wouldn't sell. I didn't say that Mac was better. I said that, being this late to the game, they're going to need to have something special. I didn't say there wasn't something special, I just said that something would need to be there.

    I've watched most of the keynote video and there do appear to be a few really cool features, especially from a developer perspective. I really like being able to develop in any application, and I like the fact that the system will run on mobile and desktop platforms.

    All that being said, I highly doubt you're going to see alot of these in use in 'corporate america'.

    What they will MOST likely do is release an "Enterprise Edition" that does not have the Metro UI, or has the ability to completely disable it. In fact, to be quite honest, most of "Corporate America" will probablt skip this release. It has been pretty common in the past. Most businesses skipped Windows 2000 and Windows Vista. They went 98 > XP > Windows 7. It doesn't make a lot of sense from a business perspective to invest in every new OS Microsoft comes out with. They will probably wait this out, see what happens with the Metro UI, and wait for the next version on the Workstation side.

    Windows Server 8 will DEFINITELY be implemented and used widely, especially for the new Hyper-V features.

    I do have the Windows 8 Developer Preview running in a VM in VMWare Workstation 8. I can definitely see the application for home users. I think it will be a BIG hit. We will see what their pricing model looks like though, I haven't really looked into that yet.

    I'm mostly in agreement, but your timetable is actually more aggressive that I expect. I'm still using XP at work (in the 40000+ person company I work for, a special ticket with approval up the chain is required to get a system re-imaged with Windows 7) and all of my primary US Government customers are still on XP and working the Win7 transition. WS2008R2 is only *beginning* to be accepted for infrastructure, most of which is still on WS2003. I know MS is trying to change this by a combination of carrots and sticks, but the bottom line is that even Windows 8 might not make it to large scale enterprise desktops unless there's a Better Reason than I see right now. What's the driver that will cause folks to finally go to Win8 in another year when today they mostly haven't even made it to Win7 yet?

    On the desktop side I completely agree... Win 7 is JUST being adopted, and most organizations are not going to jump on Win 8 for the workstation side. On the server side, as least in the spaces I see, new OS adoption tends to happen more quickly, IF the features are compelling enough. For Hyper-V users, they are definitely there. As things develop, we will see what "Windows Server 8" has to offer over 08 R2....

    I think Win 8 is going to be a hit in the home user space, but will largely be ignored by corporate entities...

    Oh, when I said next version, I meant the next version AFTER Win 8... :smile:

    To put it another way, using the 'real' numbers that a good developer would have used:
    NT 4.0 (WS/Server) was NT 4.0.
    Windows 95/98/ME was a nightmare and will not be mentioned again. Yes, I still have VMs of it for special purposes.
    Windows 2000 (WS/Server) was NT 5.0 due to the transition to Active Directory. Even though no one wants to upgrade to the x.0 version of a new OS, AD was too important to *not* use...but I knew of new NT4.0 installations going into place well after 2001...
    Windows XP and WS2003 were NT 5.1 - relatively minor upgrades. A new stable baseline.
    Vista and WS2008 were NT 6.0 ... and IME most large enterprises didn't really jump on the bandwagon.
    Win7 and WS2008R2 are NT 6.1...so they'll have enough acceptance and be a "Long Term Support" stable release.
    Win8...well, I can't figure yet whether it's NT 6.2 or 7.0, but neither one will cause a lot of enterprises to consider it the Next Great Thing...

    :smile: I never understood their versioning, but whatever they want to do. The only compelling features for Win Server 8 are related to Hyper-V, but that can ALMOST be considered separate from the Server Infrastructure and more of a Virtualization Platform. Most large organizations have not embraced Hyper-V, but there are a few, and I manage and designed most of them in my area :biggrin: With what VMWare did with their vSphere licensing, who knows what is going to happen....

    Windows 8 has some very nice features, but I can't stand the "metro" UI. At all.

    Give me those options and features with a Windows 7-style interface and maybe I'll use it. Otherwise, no chance.

    saw this on another forum, figured it might help some of you guys:
    If you are testing out the Windows 8 preview..Here are some tips:
    1. If some of your programs are having issues saving settings, Try shift+R click and use run as administrator.
    2. You can disable the Metro UI by changing this value from 1 to 0 (HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ex plorer\RPEnabled string).
    This gives you a normal start menu.

    If Microsoft pulls this off as intended, they will truly bridge the gap between tablets and PC's. As good as iOS and Android are as mobile OS's, they cannot reasonably replace the need for a PC.

    Personally, I'm excited about this.
