I'll just copy n' paste my craigslist ad first:

Yea, so I'm selling my truck. My video production business is taking off and all I see this truck doing is cutting into my bottom line for years to come because of the traveling we'll be doing. The fuel isn't the biggest factor either, we simply just can't afford to keep it. I owe $15,987 on it and have had it for about a year. The faster I get out of it the better. I've never sold a car before and would love some help & advice from the community.
Purchased used from San Diego Auto Finder dealership about a year ago now after having our Honda Accord stolen. To make a long story short, we now have buyers remorse for what seemed like a justified buy at the time because we simply can't afford it. We owe just under 16,000 on it and our loan is with Mission Federal Credit Union. I have pictures of the few blemishes the truck has. Shoot me an email and I'd be glad to get them to you. The car has 98,000 miles on it, runs great. The Carfax is clean, the truck has never been in an accident. I will respond to emails promptly. Thanks for looking!

Too much personal info. Never say how much you owe and who you have it financed with. The "buyers remorse" in your ad I would not put that in either, you will end up with low ballers looking for freebees. Put what is good or great about the truck (runs, drives, paint, condition etc.). Put what the truck "can" be used for (pulling, camping, hauling etc.) also if you never worked the truck boast about that too ("never abused", "never pulled anything", "never plowed with" etc). Find your price and ask a few hundred more for the people who will talk you down, and they will.
Good luck,

Agree with dave on this one. You should always be honest, but that doesn't mean disclose everything. WHY you're selling is irrelevant to the buyer, EXCEPT that they can use that information to get you to come down on price. Only think about what the buyer should / needs to know, and how that will affect what they will pay.If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

We will help any member with anything, that is what makes this group alittle more special then other forums IMHO. We will also wipe the floor with a person if another gets wronged, just FYI. I hope you will see the closeness of this group of people here and we welcome all members and are not closed minded or try not to be anyhow . We all have differant opions some voice them and stick to them others can bend alittle and try to learn but we all have good intentions.

curious, after you sell this truck, what are you going to get for transportation?
my point, you might buy something that devalues faster than this truck and lose out. If punching out of this truck is possible then fine (I havent blue booked the truck so I dont know) but you have to have the long term gam plan mapped out.....basically what are you going to replace it with.
I've seen people make decisions like this only to regret it.Living Room 2 Channel -

Well, no matter how slow the truck depreciates, she'll always love to sip gas. I'll be doing a lot more driving when my new business picks up and I'll need something smaller. I'm thinking about a diesal Jetta or something. My marine buddy has one and get's close to 40mpg. I also have my wife's car which is nearly paid off at my disposal so long as it doesn't interfere with her work schedule. -
NADA in my area says clean retail is around 18k. That is of course around here and what a dealer would ask. You should be able to get 15k even with the high mileage, because its a Honda and people tend to be less scared of high milage Hondas.
The guys are right. Change your ad and highlight the positives of the vehicle. -
Thanks EVERYONE for the help!

thats fine, but with the Diesel Jetta, they can run close to 24 grand if i am not mistaken. while you will be saving on gas, your debt and how much you will be "into the car" will be significantly higher than in the Honda.
example, you owe 16 on the Honda, if you finance the Jetta either your debt will be well into the 20's (or your shelling cash out to avoid that)
either way you'll be " into the car" more........there is a distinct possibility that this factor will be alot higher than what you pay in gas.
I'm not saying not to do it, I;m just saying be careful how much you spend on the new car.
a better option would be say a Ford Fiesta (15000 grand nicely appointed, less if you choose so) In this scenario youll be a little less into the car and still saving signifcantly on gas.
give a good look to the b platforms of multiple companies (mazda2, nissan Versa, Toyota Yaris et.al)
if you go c platform thats fine (ford focus, Jetta, etc...) you have to keep the cost down to make it worth it, which means a baser model
you have a play to make here, but you have to make the right one. the main point is, saving on gas is great, but in the big picture it isnt as big as some think. Some people will spend 10 grand more on a hybrid model and never save that much in gas in a reasonable vehicle lifetime.Living Room 2 Channel -

Excellent point ohskigod. This is the same reason that many find it uneconomical to get a hybrid like the Prius. Yes, it saves on gas, but the significantly higher cost of the car makes it less economical even in the long run. The exception might be for someone who puts 50k+ miles a year on the car or something absurdly high like that.

plus, with manufacturing and battery disposal, the prius will do more ecological damage to the planet than my Silverado in it's lifetime.....but thats a little off topicLiving Room 2 Channel -

This is all assuming the he gets a brand new car. A better play would be to go used. Or keep the ridgeline. If gas isnt an issue you might be better off keeping the truck. I personall think its pretty unrealistic to get 16k for an out of warrant truck with 100k miles, but maybe i am wrongShawn

ooooooooo, your gonna wanna google "Volkswagen, Reliability, early 2000's" before you pull that trigger. Volkwagen has only barely climbed out of that hole....and some would argue that.
paying for gas sucks......paying for whole engines and trannies is infinitely worse. If your going used and more economical (gas and otherwise) go japanese. Toyota, Honda, Nissan.Living Room 2 Channel -

+1, when my mother called me a few years to get some ideas on what to buy, I told her to look at CRVs and RAV4's, she called me a few hours later driving home in a brand new Teageone (sp?), she called me complaining last month about her $800.00 60k checkup, and that they wanted $450.00 to replace her TPMS sensor in the wheel. I politely told her that I loved her, and never even came close to telling to her to buy a VW.
Get a Civic or Corolla if your looking for good fuel mileage. GLWTS. -

Eh I have rolled in a 2000 VW Jetta GL (not diesel) for 5 years and have had little to no issues with it. Only problems were the radiator reservoir broke, and normal wear and tear stuff (spark plugs, brakes, tires, etc).
Maybe I am the odd one out, if so am glad to keep it that way."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
+1, Tiguan
Fixed it for ya. Personally since my next car will be an SUV I am looking at used Highlanders, Touareg's (since I really like VW) and GMC Envoys, but those are all decent gas guzzlers too..."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." If god came down from the heavens and told me I had to own a vdub from 2000, it would be the jetta. That said, your still gonna want to treat her real nice and not ruffle her feather. Just sayinLiving Room 2 Channel -

Btw I'll second the votes here for the honda crv's of the early 2000's. They seem to keep running in spite of themselfs Good mileage. Some utility, and what appears to be a bulletproof drivetrainLiving Room 2 Channel -

Just remember that when a car (like late 90's / early 2000's VWs) are 'notoriously unreliable' it just means they're much more likely than other modern cars to break down. It doesn't mean that every one of them breaks down, or that every owner has a horror story. Millions of people have perfectly good experiences with those cars, it's just, if you're playing the odds, the odds are a ltitle better that you're going to have something horrible go wrong with a 2000 VW than a 2000 Civic. If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Cubdog,
I just wanted to clearify that what I had stated was in no way directed towards you. It's just that we do help and look after one another and that would include you also if someone wronged you or you needed assistance with something.
Sorry for the interupt guys. Now back to the OP's question.

My advice (not that you asked), is stick with Honda. Keep the Ridgeline, if you can because you never know when you might need to haul something. If you must move to something smaller, look at a pre-owned Civic. The mileage won't be as good as a diesel Jetta, but will be close, and I believe that the reliability will be better, AND that any needed repairs will be more economical. My basis for this is my own experience with Honda cars (7 of them in the last 23 years).
