HVAC question

What would cause my coil to do this? It's an electric heat pump, I just turned it on heat for ten minutes or so, seems to be thawing pretty well, house is hot though. Should I be concerned? First time this has happened, coil was replaced about a year ago due to large leak.

Low refrigerant may be the reason. When was the last time it was serviced?

About a year ago, $800.00 later with the coil under warranty, it was replaced. Had a large blow-out in the coil. We did have the basement door (to the outside) open for awhile today, but not too long, if that makes a difference.

Shouldnt the compressor cycle to keep the coils from totally freezing up? Almost like the compressor is constanly running so it just freezes up like that.

I know low refrig could do that, but I think a dirty filter could do that also.

Yes, in addition to low refridg, your filters being blocked could to that as well. Or, if you've been running without a filter (bad idea) It could be that the coils themselves are blocked.
    Ludicrous gibs!

I try to replace mine once every other month, the one inside of it was fairly dirty and has been changed, I'm going to fire it up once it's fully thawed. I'm not going to risk a large investment with no filter! Who would???

Hey, for all I know, you haven't looked at it since you had the work done to it

I had to change out the filters in my dad's forced air unit about 6 months after they built the house, because he didn't think about it... His old house was hot water baseboard and had no filters. With two dogs in the house, the filters were packed solid.
    Ludicrous gibs!

Has anyone had their R-22 refrigerant system retrofitted with the R-421a refrigerant system?

HVAC businesses here in metro Atlanta do not mention this R-22 alternative; they aggressively push to install new systems with the Puron 410a refrigerant... for obviou$ rea$on$.

I should also mention that in addition to the R-421A Retrofit, there are many other Refrigerant Retrofit options to consider.

R-22 is being phased out, so this why they wish to replace the system. Does any company wish to retrofit your system near you?

That is from either low airflow across the coil or low refrigerant. Another option is that they still make R-22 units, you simply have to charge them after you get them. That is nice for when someone just needs to replace a coil or compressor and they do not need to replace an entire unit.

You could also have blockage in an **** tube or facsimile thereof, raising pressure and freezing up. What is make and model of unit you are working on /looking at ?
