long time lurker, first time poster

figured it was time to step in and say something...i live in south florida and have a weakness for stereo equipment...specifically high end stuff 10-30 years old.

if i set it up right, my stereo should be listed in my signature

overtime ive become a huge fan of polk SDA and have kind of taken on the project to collect...there is a nice pair of crs's for sale in my area but the thing holding me back is the rear firing woofer. (my stereo lines a shared wall with the apt next to me and the thing that keeps them from complaining is the absence of any rear firing or ported speakers.)

anyways, hello to all of you and should you have knowledge of any sda's for sale in south florida drop me a line
thanks

Welcome to Club Polk. That's not a rear firing woofer, it's a passive radiator.

Yea but he's already got 1C's.

The rearward firing passive radiator will not be any louder to your neighbors than your current speakers. If you play your music loud, they will hear it; if you keep it soft, they won't. This holds true whether your passive radiator is rearward firing or not.

I say get the crs's.

And I have SDA SRS 2's, SDA 1B's, Monitor 10's and Monitor 5jr+'s. That didn't stop me from owning 2B's

As far as rear versus front oriented passives, I guess I'd have to see measurements at the back wall to agree with your take on it.

I'm sticking with the theory CRS's put more energy into the neighbor's living space.

im just fearful of pushing any air or vibrations directly into that wall...do you think the crs's will do that? cause currently all of my speakers are flat backed.

thanks for the input and warm welcome

btw: im a major music collector and a fastidious librarian so if anyone was interested in hearing some music they've probably never heard, let me know....esp with the sda's..some of the music on the sda's is like hearing it for the first time.

Bass frequencies are almost perfectly omnidirectional, but a passive pointed directly at the wall would put slightly more energy into the wall than a passive pointed into the room.

Maybe he can put something on the wall behind the speakers?

Yeah, but I've got a new addiction as of 10:30 AM this morning. I bought my first reel to reel machine. http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123992

But then again, I keep hearing 1.2 TL's calling my name . . .

For the OP, we are really splitting hairs. If the neighbor is going to complain, 2 or 3 decibels of bass volume isn't going to make a difference.

im sorry for not giving you all of the details up front:

the speakers will reside 4.5" from the (front) wall that is 17' long and has all of the speakers (except the rears) in my signature facing the opposite (back) wall that is 13' away.

the rears are 6'8" high and are facing down and in to address the main listening spot which is on a couch that lines the back wall.

Your setup is traditional and just fine.

I really never should have posted anything about front versus rear passives (or an woofer for that matter)

Bass frequencies radiate in an almost perfect circle, no matter which way the driver is pointing. The difference between the bass in front and back is only a few db so the CRS would be a great choice and will get you in zero percent more trouble with neighbors than any other speaker design on the planet.

well i just got home after taking a 100 mile drive to meet the guy selling the sda crs's on craigslist...listed 225 w/o the interconnect cable....got down to brass tax and agreed on 150 over the phone

show up, they are just as he said so i took them

talked to polk today and they are sending me a blade/blade 25' IC cable by end of the week.
i didnt feel like waiting for it so i plugged them in just now and they sound great...but i noticed it seems like the outside tweeters on both speakers arent working...i mean i put my ear up to them and it doesnt seem like they are working unless they are playing really high register hz's that im not hearing...(i cant really turn them up right now cause my roommate has gone to bed...he works early mornings)

do these need work?...whats your suggestions on this?...did i get ripped off on the price?

i mean bottom line, they sound great right now at low volume without the interconnect and possibly 2 tweeters off...which i guess is a testament to the awesomeness of these speakers by themselves.

if i wanted to give a freshman try at replacing those tweeters, what would my investment be like? i saw a lot of conversation about rdo-194's, is that a good idea?

    thanks

I am pretty sure those are SDA tweeters and should not be active without the cable - I think.
