Looking to buy external hard drive

I know it's not rocket science but since i had 3 external HDs fail on me over the last 5-6-or so years figured I'll ask.
Don't remember what exact brands/models they were but last one was Western Digital if that matters.
Anyways - looking for something that will last (not crash and make me lose my files), about 1TB space and not break my wallet. Also would like one that doesn't need to be "set-up" on every computer I wanna use it on as it will be moved from one place to another. Think of it as huge memory stick.
Last time I checked at Staples 1BT drives were around $300 so that's the budget I'll stay with unless it makes sense to add more to get that "will never crush" feature lol.
Thanks in advance

estata, 2tb , $100
fantom uses western digital drives, which are good. They also do not use drives with proprietary connectors so you can hook it up as a regular hard drive if you like -
$300? You can get 3TB drives for a little over a hunny.
+1 on the Fantom. -
I'd be inclined to buy your own drive and enclosure. You'll get a retail warranty on the drive in that case, three years for a good one.

This is what I have and it works just fine. It's a little over a year old.

I would also recommend building your own. An enclosure with good cooling is a must.
We have been using these for 7 years at work, we have 6 of them, with no drive failures yet, I also have one at home:

Then just pick any decent drive, I've had good luck with Samsung:

Whatever you pick, if you will be doing large file transfers, make sure it has an e-sata port. Much faster than USB. -
Backup anything you care about in multiple places.
It's not a matter of if a drive will fail; it's a matter of when.2-Channel: PC > Schiit Eitr > Audio Research DAC-8 > Audio Research LS-26 > Pass Labs X-250.5 > Magnepan 3.7's
