Monitor 5 -- Crossover problem?

Hello Polk people,

I'd be grateful for some advice. I have a pair of Monitor 5s. The tweeter in one of them is not working. I replaced it with a new-to-me tweeter, same type (Peerless) as the original. Still not working.

So my questions are:

1. Would I be correct to assume that the problem is with the crossover? (it's not the amplifier, either)

2. If so, would the easiest way to solve it be to replace the whole crossover, or just one of the components? I don't mind a bit of soldering.

Thanks very much!

If you have Peerless tweets, you probably have fuse protection on them. Double check the fuse and make sure the fuse holder is nice and clean.

If that does not resolve the problem, it may be the crossover. I would advise replacing all caps and resistors, on both speakers. You can thank me later!

Oh my life, I didn't even think of the fuse! Does it only protect the tweeter? Well, that'll be a lot easier than the crossover if you're right... cheers.

I beleive the monitor 5 is not a very complicated crossover and rarely die , it sounds like the capacitor blew up , or if you mave a fuse on yours check the fuse .

The fuse only protects the tweeter. If you don't have a fuse, it likely has a polyswitch which is known to be a weak link. The polyswitch would be located on the crossover board and pretty easy to eliminate.

I do indeed have fuses -- I hadn't thought of them because I hadn't realised they only protected the tweeter. Thanks a lot guys, I will check that out. Fingers crossed -- sounds a lot simpler than messing about with components.

I hope you get them working. I just fixed up a pair of Monitor 5B form 1984. They are really an impressive little speaker.

Belated update: it was indeed the fuse. In fact, the actual fuse was fine; it turned out that one of the two clip things that house the fuse had sort of relaxed so it was no longer pinching one end and completing the circuit. Quick squeeze with a pair of pliers, and here I am listening in glorious full stereo. Almost embarrassingly simple.

Thanks a lot folks -- saved me some time-consuming, costly, and ultimately frustrating mucking around with capacitors and so on. Very grateful.
