Acoustic Treatments

I just got my 4th noise complaint in just over two weeks. The management had me turn my music down to an average of 60db (this is on my iPhone SPL, I think it reads higher) and the upstairs neighbor can still hear bass like crazy (I verified this myself). This is with bookshelf speakers.

My room echos quite a bit and I am wondering if this has anything to do with how much is heard above and below me. It is clear that this apartment has really thin walls, as I can hear people open and close drawers and walk above me.

Are there any treatments that might help this problem? If so, I will need many, so cost will be important.

Nothing stops bass. It goes through walls as if they were transparent. That is my biggest gripe with neighbors. Whether it is boom boom cars, or a neighbor 5 houses away playing music outside, I can hear/feel the bass. The rest of the music is inaudible, but the bass just keeps on going. Of course, this only applies to music where the bass is over emphasized, but there isn't anything I can do about people's choice in music.

Obviously, home theater boom booms are also going to be heard/felt through walls.

Turn the music down if you live in an apartment.

I play everything at 75db average. This is on my iphone spl meter. I have a feeling that it is off.... I could be wrong. It reads 75 when I talk, 51 in my room with nothing on (well, the AC is blowing and my computer is on) and 75db +-10db when I listen to music.

They had me turn it down to 60, which is only 9db above what the room is reading right now. At this level, I still got a complaint from the guy upstairs. I went to his apartment to verify, and sure enough, from the doorway I could hear booming.

My dryer is already louder than the level at which the guy above can hear my music. Any lower and I will have headphones.

Wow... My kids run at like 85 or 90 dB!!! 60 dB is a joke. IMHO, either the Manager needs to tell the guy upstairs to be a little more reasonable, or the management/owner needs to pay for room treatments. Being able to have a converstation in your apartment without other people hearing it should be assumed. Normal conversation is 60 dB, a dishwasher is 75 dB... I know we are talking about bass frequencies here, but come on!!!

Does this place have a bunch of people waiting in line for apartments? If so, it gives you less leverage, but If not, then I think you would have some options. Heck, if that much sound transfers, I doubt it is up to code

My upstairs and downstairs neighbor BOTH hear my rain sounds at night that I use to sleep. These sounds are played through 2.5 inch speakers.. come on.

The complex is full...when I moved in they had like 3 apartments left

I am not going for headphones... I'm actually getting the Sequel II's from Dawgfish... imagine the look on their faces when they see those monsters.

I'll definitely do a write up. I have a few fears about the ML's... I may or may not upgrade the panels... it all depends on how I like them. Dawgfish tells me they are difficult to drive... I might have to replace my amp just to run them... but who knows... I'll find out tomorrow.

But then I would have to wear headphones.

I don't see that happening any time soon.

I live in an apartment still. I found just find out when they aren't around and then play music at the level you want when they are gone. For me I don't really play anything loud after 9 at night but when Friday and the weekend rolls around I can do whatever I want.

    Otherwise headphones, or move.

I don't even turn my music on during the week. I only play it on Friday/Saturday and I never play it after 10. I get complaints at like 11 am on saturday, or 2pm or whatever. Sorry, but that's retarded. My preferred listening level is around 75db... I should be able to do that anytime I want... it's really sad when you can't even do that on saturday during the day.

I watched a movie w/heaphones after I switched the player to 2ch it was actually nice to be able to do that when the kids were a sleep .
At first tried some wireless heaphones they were OK but weak on bass , I really want to try some large ?circumural? types .

but you live in an apartment. So your not able to do anything you want at any time. Trust me I've been there and know how it goes.

In the end if you don't like it, move. If they move out you'll just get another that complains more.

Yep, apartments suck, we've all been there and hated it. Hey 20hz., I remember having a pair of those huge 4 channel headphones back in the day, lol, I think Technics used to make them.

Off topic a little, but today I pulled down my Acoustic Panels to clean them and just walking and talking in the room is crazy without them, you forget what it sounds like in your room without them I could never have an audio room without them...
