PS3 Video Quality Poor

Just picked up a PS3 today (160GB version, slim) and hooked it up to the Epson Home Cinema 1080UB projector with HDMI. Out of the box, the video quality is poor - it looks overenhanced with lots of edge enhancement, mosquito noise, picture artifacts, and motion blur (the picture loses sharpness during fast moving scenes)
The PS3 is set to display 1080p over HDMI. On the projector all video enhancements are turned off and set to TheaterBlack 1 mode with no sharpness enhancement or Epson Super White / Dynamic Contrast settings on.
What gives? There's got to be a way to turn off some edge enhancement, the pix is unnatural looking and way too processed looking. Lots of mosquito noise in dark scenes too.
Thanks!

Sounds like a settings issue on the PS3. Go into the video settings and play around a bit. What are you using for video material? Blu ray, dvd, game, etc. I use a PS3 on my 50" Samsung Plasma at 1080P and experience none of what you describe using any source material.SDA-1C (full mods)

I am just using concert DVD's (mostly bands and performances) right now.
Went into the settings, and turned off the "upscale" feature for DVD's so the projector does the upscaling. Better, but still a lot of noise and artifacts.
The mosquito noise in dark scenes is what looks the worst.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

Exchange for an Oppo? The PS3 should be a pretty good player though, possible reset and start fresh.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion Sherard, I may pick up the Oppo, but since all my friends play PS3 I think this one's a keeper...polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

Are you sure it isn't the DVDs? I haven't been too impressed with concert movies - all have issues with PQ and if you then take standard def and upscale it whether its the player or the display, you are going to see scaling artifacts.

The concert DVDs play fine on my Toshiba HD-XA1, Panasonic DVD Recorder, HP Digital Entertainment Center z560 HTPC, Apple Mac Mini, and Onkyo DV-CP500 which are all connected to the projector.
Right now I have the following hooked up:
1. HP Digital Entertainment Center (main HTPC)
2. Toshiba HD-XA1 (only HD-DVDs)
3. Apple Mac Mini (Windows 7 DVD player via BootCamp)
4. Onkyo DV-CP500 (used for mostly music)
5. Xbox 360 (used for occasional movies)
6. Playstation 2, PS3 (used for occasional movies)
7. Panasonic DVD Recorder (don't really use it, rarely ever)
In order of DVD quality, I would say the HP is the best because of the nVidia graphics card and the game consoles are the worst. So in numerical order, # 1 is the best and # 6 is the worst. I have not used# 7 in a while for comparson.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

Just to give you an idea of how the setup is wired, the following picture (courtesy of CurtPalme.com) is a good representation of how everything is hooked up together:
My setup is slightly different - for example, the Wii, PS2, SNES, and VHS VCR are all connected via composite to a four port switcher, but it would just make the picture look even more complicated if I added all those switchers in:polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

Whenever you deal with upscaling, it's difficult to know where in the chain the problem is. Try playing a 1080p blu-ray. You should at least have a pristine signal coming out of the ps3 for this. And if the artifacts are showing up for a blu-ray, then either the ps3 is defective, or you've got a problem somewhere in the chain.
You can also try swapping the HD-DVD connection with the ps3 just to rule out the HDMI connection. -
Another thing I thought of, make sure you choose the correct black space. Limited is actually the correct one for standard US tvs. Full is for TVs set to international standards and US computer monitors. If the black space is incorrect, dark scenes will either look too dark or a mushy grey.

One final thought. Digital artifacts often show up when an HDMI connection is at its limit either in cable length, quality of the cable, or things in between the source and display (like adapter connections). Over short cable runs, this shouldn't be a problem. How long is the HDMI cable run?
