All depends, new, used, but a 50 buck cdp isn't going to be much, if any, better. Throw out a budget and I'm sure we can toss a recommendation your way.

I went from playing CD's using a Panasonic Blu-ray to a Jolida JD-100 CD player and yes the Jolida is much better. The first thing I noticed was much cleaner defined/controlled bass, better separation, and improved clarity.

Another benefit with the Jolida is the fact that you can roll Tubes and change the sound, I'm using Psvanes and couldn't be happier.

What I have noticed when occasionally using my Bluray (or a DVDP) is that bass seems to suffer the most. Not a lack of it, but it's less articulate, more rounded-off, and muffled to a degree. Treble also seems less airy and natural. It just sounds more "electronic" I guess.

Really depends. If you have the same kind of setup these guys do with $1000 speakers, etc. then yes, you will notice a difference. If your like me and have a $150 pair of Polk TSi 100's then probably not.

I think my Onkyo CD player sounds just a bit better than my Panasonic and Sony DVD players. I liked my old 1985 Sony better than any of them but it's apart now for cleaning the laser.

Have you compared a brp vs a decent Cdp with your speakers?

I betbyou can tell a difference.

What I am hearing (pun intended) is most are comparing analogue outs, ie letting the cd player do the conversion; lots of variables here, and room for opinion.

If using HDMI or digital outputs of a player than you will not likely hear a difference between players using a DAC of your choice; bits are bits right?

    Yes and no.

They were comparing sound quality from a BDP vs. CDP. I have noticed a difference between HDMI, and digital coax inputs on my gear. All digital,be it connections, cables,or source material, is not the same.

I compated my Sony BlueRay disc vs. my Onkyo with Wolfson DACS and I have to say the CDP sounds better, but not by much. It's more "detailed" but that's about it. No DACs were used btw.

That's a start. Is the onkyo an avr or Cdp? Once you move your 2 channel stuff off the avr to a preamp that may be as good as it gets. Need more details like cables, Cdp and what you don't like about the sound.

There are some models from Oppo that are supposed to do both video and audio very well, some even play SACDs. I always prefer to use single purpose pieces, if available.

I don't own an AVR. The Onkyo is both a CD player (C-S5VL) and a vintage reciever (TX-6500MKII). Cables are just some monoprice RCA cables, and I just think I don't hear as much with the BD-P.

Never used a blu ray player for CDs, but will say that the upgrade from using a Sony DVD player as a single disc player, and a Sony 400 Disc CD player to my current Shenda player was a huge step up, before I even switched out the JJ Tesla tubes that it came with. Changing out the tubes to some vintage Sylvania and Amperex brought it to a whole new level.

I guess your options depend on your budget, as it has already been noted that going with a single purpose $50 budget player probably won't result in any performance gains.
