Turntable Guru's, question....

I have recently gotten the vinyl rig back up and running and last night I discovered that my Music Hall MMF-5 motor makes some kind of noise. It seems it only does this when it gets hot, as I'm running it now and she's dead quiet.

Is this common for TT's to do this or is there something that I should look for when troubleshooting this?

The best way to describe it would be kind of a hum with a slight vibration-type sound but with no vibration. Not really audible from 2 feet away but this is something that is not normal and that needs correcting. The sound does not get into the amplification and it is not audible through the speakers. Any of you have any advice or experienced this kind of thing before?

I do not think that is normal. I have left my clear audio motor on all night accidentally of course but is stick quiet and smooth.

Suspect bearings are getting dry or something. Have you checked the speed to see if it is affected?

No, I haven't done that. Don't really know how to do that, to be honest. The speed of the LP's do not sound slow or altered. I'm surprised that when I heard it last night, that everything seemed to be like normal, just with this foreign noise from the motor. It's been on for the past three or so hours and not a peep from it so far.

I was running it for close to 12 hours or more yesterday, constantly.

Friction=heat so i would think that it needs lubed.
Is it belt drive? Maybe the belt is slipping a bit on the pulley to create friction and heat as well.
i'm no expert but it's what i would check first.
    Good luck.

+1, most likely it needs a couple drops of sewing oil, I don't know where you put it on that TT. Look for a small hole on the motor. Could be a belt issue causing it as well. Good Luck!

Just lubed up the armature and I will keep it running constantly until tomorrow AM. Thanks. Will update then.

Might check your spindle oil too. May be low and put more drag on belt and motor. Oh btw, I am no TT guru.

Obviously, either am I. Well, it failed already. Right about after hour 6 or 7....about 3 hours after lubricating the motor armature. I'll wait for some other possible suggestions and then tear into her after I chat with MH on Monday. Was just hoping to find something to remedy the sound this weekend. No biggie.

I might have a spare belt around here somewhere. I'll see and check that avenue also since it wasn't the armature of the motor.

Check the platter spindle, may need some oil. My ca say to add a drop or two every couple of years.
