I need some thoughts on a Sherwood S5000, again one of those deal with no tubes but looks like its been well cared for. I can get the amp for $125 and I have a good tube source. Do I grab this amp?

Short answer - fug yeah assuming the transformers are good.
Slightly longer answer - I for one get all confuzzled by the various flavors of Sherwood stereo integrateds. S5000. S5500. S5000II. S5500II. und so weiter, und sofort.

They're all nice - some are nicer than others. My personal fave (an example of which I don't have) is whichever one used 7189 outputs. Other Sherwood amps used 7591s; others still, 7868. The innards of various versions with the same model designation could vary (e.g., placement of output tubes).

They're still all good - some are even gooder, though. 125 is an OK price, I'd opine, if cosmetics are excellent (any of the white paint worn away?) and transformers good.

Here's a bad photo of whichever one I have :-)

This is the version with 7189's and yes George not having the background or in my case limited intelligence makes this hobby a ****. Thank god for this site and the knowledge of its members. So mhardy, you thinks I should go for it?

well - I'd like to have one of those... so... if you don't mind my living vicariously via your hifi exploits, then, sure...

    :-)

Oh, the one I have has 7591 outputs, by the bye...

He's lucky he lives a long way away. Guys don't get the chance to even ask those questions around here.

It's done! I'm going to get the Sherwood Sunday. I've gone tube crazy this week, the Fisher 500c and now this. I hope something sold at the store.

Only said it cause of the newly opened "Vintage" stereo shop.

I had a 500C for awhile. Somebody left it on my desk at work about 15 years ago.

Don't sweat it Cayuga, you're doing a great job, and I think GG would agree with that. No one really has a command of all this stuff even after a lifetime in the hobby. Look at mhardy's post...and he knows at least 10X what you or I do. Even he isn't fully up to speed on all the Sherwood 'variations'.

I know, there are moments when I still feel like I'm wading in the 'kiddie' pool and I'm glad that there are a few others who can swim in the 'deep end' who are in that same pool with me.

I like the 500C(*). I'll take the next one George has left on his doorstep (or "stoop", as they say in Baltimore), no problem.

    * although, in fairness, I sort of prefer the sound of its cheaper little sibling, the 400. Not sure why that is, though.

My brother has a S5500 IV with the 7868 tubes. He's got it hooked up with some Monitor 60's (or 70's, I can't remember) and it sounds great. It looks similiar to the one in mhardy's photo. Good luck!!!
