Need advice on APC

So I can get a FREE Smart-UPS1000 (http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=su1000net) from my father. Says the batteries would need to be replaced, but looking online it would cost me about $60.

Will this work for my system the way it is (not taking into consideration any future, adding amps or anything like that); or am I better off saving a little cash and buying an actual AV product?

I just figured if I purchase something myself, it would not involve a UPS. I'm just not sure if the 1000 is big enough. Although he says he comes across these all the time and people would rather just get rid of them instead of buying the batteries - so it is very possible he could find me a 1500-2000+ unit if the product itself would work, but is too small @ 1000.

Thanks in advance. Just trying to weigh my options and find a suitable middle ground being the broke **** that I am.

Sorry Glowdr I forgot you PM'd me. I suppose you could us a UPS for audio, generally it's overkill because of all the extra's like USB, ethernet, battery, etc.

Pro's to this unit - Voltage Regulation

Big Con - that I would really watch is it only rated for 670watts. That's pretty low. If you don't plug an amp and/or powered subwoofer into it you'll probably be fine. What components are you looking to plug into it?

I realize it's free so it's a huge incentive but it's made for computer and peripherials so it's not as stout a unit as made for A/V use.

Another Con - it has 6 plug-ins most A/V units have 10-12 plug-ins. If it were me, I'd take it but use it for my computer and wait on something else for the A/v rig.

What is the age of the unit (very important)?

Unsure of the age unfortunately. There may be a manufacture date on it, but I don't have it in my possession yet. I would assume this in regards to the life of the MOV's?

As for the gear connecting to it - it would be the SC-37, Oppo 93, PS3, TV and my DVR (Dish VIP911). My sub is located in another corner of the room, and has a dedicated sub surge.

I do realize the battery is overkill, I guess it might save some recordings being split into 2 when I have little blips during a storm, hardly much to consider though. I also know the joule rating on this thing is surprisingly low, but I guess i don't know what the threashold between "normal surge" and "lightning" meets for the point of no return.

So it almost sounds like you'd all recommend just saving up and picking up something along the lines of the H15 then (or getting seperates like communicated on previous threads). When I say "save" for the unit, I'm really just complaining that I just bought 2 HP Touchpads and now have to wait 2 weeks. lol I'd rather just tell my dad im not interested and get the right thing if that's the best option.

Also, besides the usual Amazon, any good APC retailers out there that I should be checking out? I saw their outlet center, but it doesn't appear to cater to us AV people.

I like the thought of a battery backup on items like a projector in case it wouldn't case the bulb to suddenly go out and then get fired right back up.

IMO if you have storms still the best thing to do is unplug. I unplug everything in my HT and 2 channel set ups when I am not home during the day and if I"m not using the items ect. I only leave it up normally if I do listening over a weekend ect but if I hear a storm is coming thru there is nothing that I trust that would save my gear.

I have renter's insurance and everything however I don't trust anything, even if it was a "whole home surge protector".
