It's been a long time since I've been so affected by the loss of someone I've never met...

Yup, heard it on the news up here in MA this morning (as he was from NH... Manchester, IIRC). No cause of death, last I heard. EDIT: oh, just read the WBAL blurb; that's what I was afraid of, given his young age...

I remember him well as a pitcher; we were still in B-more in those days.

For me, those were the golden years for the O's. I was four when they lost to the Pirates in the Series, in '83 I was eating and breathing baseball as many eight year old American boys do. My mom still has my bat they gave out on bat day '84 that had the signatures of the whole championship team the year before. Flanagan was the classiest on a roster filled with classy baseball players.

From what I've read, he was despondant over his perception of the public's opinion of his role in the performance on the club recently. I thought he was out of the management in '08; doesn't really add up to me. Besides, every O's fan I know blames that a**hole Angelos for the way the team's been going.

Absolutely, great times for the Orioles as well. Brooks, Frank, Apiricio, Belanger etc. I just wasn't around yet to enjoy them first hand.

    Angelos has destroyed the Orioles.
    Nothing but a billionaires hobby.
I had hoped Ripken Jr would have gotten the financing to buy the team but i guess that was a pipe dream.
Growing up in the 60's and 70's was a great time to be a Baltimore sports fan.
Now,not so much. The ravens are cool to have but the Colts will always be my team. The BALTIMORE COLTS that is.
Bullets are gone,Clippers are gone.Oh but we have the Blast! Woopee.

Gus Triandos and Milt Pappas. All Greek battery. Probably a first and a last.

I am just - barely - old enough to remember both.

Flanagan's death is extremely sad - particularly if it truly was tied in with (his perception of his role in) the current state of the Orioles. Stuff like that just shouldn't happen.

I too hope Cal gets involved with the team. I believe he was been busy with his son in high school. So I think he said he will have more time to spend with the Orioles in some role. +1 to the BALTIMORE COLTS, had a lot of fun at those games. I loved the whole Memorial Stadium experience. It was no frills for sure but it was truly Baltimore. RIP Flanny, we'll miss you.
