The hunt

I really can't tell if I enjoy the time spent listening to vintage stereo equipment as much as the hunt for vintage equipment. I must say I enjoy both, I just don't know witch I enjoy more. Today the hunt was great, I picked up a pair of Electro Voice 7A's, Fisher 500C, KLH Model 6, Kenwood TK-66, Advent The Loud Speaker, Sansui Receiver 7 and the crown jewel a Thorens TD124. It's days like this that make me wonder why I started so late in life. I think my wife and kids would have starved to death if I started years ago. So I guess it worked out.

Naaaah.... you'd have just had to buy a larger house sooner :-)

The Thorens is a bit like a vintage British sportscar - it'll be a labor of love, but worth it if you enjoy that sort of thing... or you can just flip it :-P

The Thorens may already be on its way to another home, I'm working a trade deal and the Thorens is the ace in the hole. Whats the deal with the Sansui? Good, bad or indifferent?

It's OK - some people really love the ss Sansui stuff, and some of it is quite nice (particularly the separates and their tuners)... but I am not a devoted fanboy. That particular Rx (which is pretty old) I am none too familiar with. I'd expect it to be well built and to have a good tuner. HTH.

Not much chance of my "poaching" the hunting grounds if they're in the Fingerlakes area, I'd fall asleep on the 600-700 mile trip up to there. Ahem indeed!

There's interesting stuff to be found everywhere. This my reference to Louis Pasteur, above :-)

Here are a couple of photos of my favorite vintage hifi emporium, taken just about this time last year, on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. The selection is eclectic and the inventory quite variable, but the prices are right (free) and there's a generous return policy to boot.

Sorry for the tangent. Seemed somehow apt to me.

    Love Mark's hunting grounds above.

Yea, Sansui is pretty much a love them or leave them affair. But I find that I prefer the 'earlier' Sansui sound like your Model 7 and my 5000a--I find them, to my ear, a little smoother and more musical, maybe not as 'detailed' as the behemoths that followed, but certainly better sounding with 'Vintage' speakers!

Enjoy. I'm on that hunt as well, trying to pick up some Dynaco A25s and am waiting delivery of a Pioneer SX-838 (two models down from what some consider the Pioneer peak--the SX-1010).

    Enjoy!

chn, good luck with the hunt. I have some Dynaco A25 VW and I think I'll be getting some older A25's in the next day or so. Shoot me a PM if I can help. I'm out looking everyday, I found a pair of RT25's today for $10. I love the hunt and to gdb's question "where's the hunt?" my haul yesterday covered 3 states.

Thanks, appreciate the help! Well, my Pioneer SX-838 is here and boy can this thing 'crank' for a (50 watt x 2) 1974 receiver. I've got it at a bit less than a quarter volume and it's pumping some EPI 100Vs to over 80db--some light listening.

    The hunt continues.

he lives out in the country - I think it's all country out there

edit -p.s. on second look it's probably not the same place but the same concept. they do have a shack at his recycle center / dump / for people to put giveaway items that someone else might find of some value.

negative on that zip code -- but the small-town "dump" (more typically "Transfer Station" in these Modern Times) is still a fixture of New England life. Our town dump is where townspeople meet and it's the center of town politics. One must campaign at the dump when one runs for public office in a town like ours.

The "Yankee Swap" or "Take it or Leave it" pile is likewise a New England tradition. Some towns (especially larger ones) have eliminated the practice, and even our town has curtailed it somewhat over the years (mostly due to various forms of 'abuse' that ended up costing the town $)... but I think there'd be rioting in the streets if the DPW curtailed it entirely.

The dump. It's a magical place.

If it's in nice shape, that TD 124 may be a piece you want to hold on to.
