Hi all,
Just joined the club today. I have a pair of old polk monitor series 2 M3 (not exact same as the M3II). Actually they're my parents speaker and used them as the surround speaker before upgraded to the B&W. Instead of discard them, I set them in my bedroom pluged to NAD c340. Problem is when the detail and high sound very good, I got "empty" bass. So my question is whether this M3 IS a surround speaker ONLY and not suitable as a main speaker or this is the natural of bookshelf speaker (no deep bass)? Thanks all!

Regards,
Hendry

    Hello Hendry,
Welcome to Club Polk! The M3 was probably Polk's all-time number one selling audio product. Tens of thousands were sold over the years and you can spot them in lots of different applications. Here in Baltimore you can find them in bars, restaurants, book stores, candy shops, everywhere. I talked to a guy, once, who was using them on a swan-boat ride at Boston's commons.
But to answer your question, they produce about the same level of bass response as a medium sized bookshelf speaker. Go easy with the support brackets and grille covers, they're no longer available.
    Cheers, Ken

    Thanks Ken,
I also have read that these speakers are about as good as other 2 way bookshelfs, but still I confuse with the "not so kicking" sound the M3 produces. So, I guess this M3 ok to use as main front speaker? Is there anyway I can improve the bass? Thanks again.

Keep in mind this is just my opinion, but I don't think of them as "main" speakers. I don't believe they are full range enough for that job. I think of them more as secondary location speakers, where the overall sound is more for background use. That's not taking anything away from them, put them in a kitchen or bedroom or office and they are great.
They would produce the most amount of bass if they are placed near a wall or corner. That is why they came with a wall hanging bracket built in so they could benefit from being located close to a wall.
I hope this is helpful information.
    Cheers, Ken
