Question about selling a car? HELP!

This is probably a dumb question but I'll ask anyway since there always seems to be an expert of EVERYTHING here on the boards!

My wife and I are selling her old car. We know that the car needs some brake work done to it but we're not sure how much. As of right now the sale is pending. We have informed the seller of the brake issue (and lowered the blue book value with what we thought was reasonable). Our concern is if something were to happen to the buyer after buying the car, are we liabel in any way for selling a car that needs brake work? or are we OK as long as we inform the buyer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

well true, but make sure that statment is in print on paper signed by both parties, saying anything doesnt matter to a court, its whats on the paper. sold as is.. in bold print works fine.

Oh I forgot to mention the main reason we're concerned. The buyer is Hispanic and we're not sure just how much English he understands. He often translates through his young daughter...

So if we had him sign a paper should we have it written in English AND Spanish?

you state in the bill of sales, by signing this you understand all terms written, or something to that effect, no need to write in spanish, if he can buy a car and pay the money he understands the terms, if your not sure, go to a local bank and use a notary..

We're selling an old car as well... it needs exhaust work and front brakes. But, the value just doesn't justify putting ANY work into it so we are selling it "as is." I'll put in the paper that it needs work... I work with 5 attorneys so I may bounce the question off of them, but I think it is pretty much buyer beware, you get what you pay for.

By the way.. anyone want a 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 Custom, 289... oh ya.. it needs exhaust work and front brakes. I'm hoping to get $500.. runs great, it has been my 'work car' for the past 7 years.

    Thanks guys!

I did some digging and in Ohio "As Is" sales are legal so I'm making up the Bill of Sale agreement with that in it.

I got married 2 weeks ago and now we're selling a car. resulting in all kinds of cash in the bank and my wife still won't let me get my amp! driving me crazy! if she could only find a damn job then I'd be set!

Thanks again for the help! I knew you guys would know what to do!

Did you save your receipt? Because it is less than 30 days, you may be able to return her for an upgraded, more agreeable model.

Nope, no receipt! I've known her too long!

after days like yesterday (telling me not to buy an amp) I'm ready to trade her in but then there is other days when she'll tell me if she had a job she'd let me buy the PB2+ on credit card and pay it off later. I think she says things like that to play with my emotions, and make me feel like I have a say in something, WOMEN!!

    tryrrthg,

Take a little marital advice from a one-time loser. Get the finances set up "yours - mine - ours". As in pool income for common expenses, including vacations, savings, etc. on top of bills. Weight the contribution to the pool along the lines of the income ratio, but skew the percentage higher for the higher earner.

What's left over is the individual's to spend as he/ she sees fit. Of course presents to each other come from those "left-overs" as well.

Trust me, it'll save you from a lot of money "discussions" down the road...
    More later,

That sounds like a GREAT idea to me but I don't think that would go over very well with her. She got a little annoyed with me the other day because I told her to pick up "my" new John Mayer CD off the floor of the car. She said "you mean OUR CD." It's going to be weird not thinking things are "mine" but I don't mind. It's just hard because she can't find a job after 6 months out of grad school... She does have two part time jobs which helps, but not much...

Thanks for the well wishes faster!

She's great. she only said that because I have been slipping a lot lately about things like that. My stereo is definitely MINE! She knows that, she's usually afraid to even touch my stereo. she's more concerned with me thinking of paying my own bills and not hers (I mean ours), etc. you know, still thinking like a bachelor.
