I have one sub in my 7.1 setup, is there truly any value in a second one? I understand the position of the sub is not nearly as critical as the other speakers so if I did add one where would it be optimal to place it? currently my sub sits to the right of my front speaker setup.

thanks.

Depends. What is your other equipment like and the room dimensions you are using it in? Do you also need the sub for music?

There are a lot of very good subs at a little higher price level in the $500-800 range. You may be happier stepping up in quality for your next upgrade.

Outfitter03 has a valid point, but I can comment on dual 505s as that is what my dad's set up has. He has two JBL L166s as fronts, and the 505s sit right under them toed in about the same as the speakers. I think the immediate consequence to two of the subs is that the volumes don't have to be has high, so they're not working as hard. And of course they hit a bit harder in concert. I think if I separated the source signals to L and R respectively, that might improve things for stereo music as well. But I need to try it.

I was in your situation a while back. I had a 505 and wanted more bass and didn't have a huge budget so I just bought another one. It definitely made a difference but I ended up selling both to upgrade within a few months.

you should absolutely do it if you want more low end, the 505 is an excellent sub, stack and corner load them for the most increase in db, likely around 6....but you can move them around to what sounds best to you.

Thanks, setup is 7.1 as follows: my fronts are rtia9s, center is csi6 sorround and backs are fxia6. pushed by rx-v2700 yamaha acurus 3x200 for fronts and two parasound 2125 for rear. room is fairly large split into two functions...i know not the best for theater...pool table at one end, room is about 15' wide and easily 35' long, stereo equipment is in a 15x15 area give or take. psw sits rh corner front. the use is primarily going to be movie watching, but some music from time to time while shooting pool. entire setup in basement so not conducive to everyday use.

    Thanks all.

I have the 550wi and it sounds awesom. It hits pretty hard and sounds good with music.

thanks for all the suggestions, next question, with two what is the best strategy for placement? I realize it depends is the correct answer but gotta start somewhere, stacking...literally? just place one on top of the other or side by side? or two different places in the room? thanks.

Each room is different, try them in different areas if possible, see what sounds right to you.

I would start by placing one in each corner up front. Maybe one in the Front LH corner and one in the Rear RH corner.
