Sub Troubleshooting Help

I'm having an issue with a low continuous rumble coming from my sub when watching movies or some video games. It doesn't seem to be related directly to the soundtrack and it is giving my wife headaches. It can be reduced by playing with the sub volume, but I think that is just masking the issue. The sub is an Energy ESW-8 in a corner placement behind the TV with Monitor 40 mains, CS1 center and 4 Energy Take Classic surrounds run by an Onkyo TX-NR609 receiver. Any ideas as to how I can clean the sound up and prevent marital mayhem? Thanks in advance.

humm, sounds like the amp may be going out , I think if the power suppley capicitors are going bad you will get noise but I dont remember if its a hum .
Can you hear that sub much , are the monitor 40's on a stand ?
if so place them on the ground , turn off the sub .
How old is the sub ? -
Is this a new sub to your setup or have you had it a while and the low rumble is a new issue?
It could be a ground loop although that wouldn't be a "rumble" but more of a continuous low resonant tone.Main Setup
Fronts - Energy RC-50's
Center - Energy RC-LCR
Rear - Energy RC-R's

Thanks for the replies. The sub is only about a month old and the Monitor 40s are on stands. The sound could be described as a low resonant tone. "Rumble" was the best description that I could come up with on the fly. What would be the cause and solution to a ground loop?

I have a ground loop noise in my new parts express sa240 plate amp , I suggest looking up parts express read up on the amps "customer ratings" maybe that will give you a awnser , I was told to put in a 3-2 wire ground adapter plug thus the ground is left not connected .
The problem is so common prosound amps have a ground loop switch that just is a switch that turns opens the ground wire circuit so it does not get toi the chassis .
I am sure ground loop noises all varie mine was basically only heard if you were under 8 feet away the new plug .
With the new plug adapter I could basically only hear it with my ear almost up to the speaker . -
try changing the placements of your equipment and isolate the problem..probably you're talking about the speaker buzz problem right?

Buy a cheater plug for 2 bucks at your local hardware store and put it either on the sub, or receiver. Don't worry, you won't get a shock or some voodoo electricity thing happen. Groundloops are common, and can be tricky to chase down, but the cheater plug is the fastest and easiest solution.HT SYSTEM-
