LSI vs LSIm

My son is headed back to college in a few weeks and he needs a new pair of speakers for his on-campus apartment (Blew out his last pair during his sophmore year - college kids -go figure).

Here's my dilema. I can either buy him a set of speakers (used or new for about 300-400 bucks) or give him my LSI9s. I'm being selfish because if I give him my LSI9s and I can upgrade to the LSIM 703s

To help me make a decision, can someone tell me if the LSIM 703 is leaps and bounds better than the LSI9? My listening is about 70% HT and 30% Music.

Thoughts?

Grab the LSiM's for you and let him take th 9's with him. Make sure he takes a proper 4 ohm capable amp with him.

If I decidee to give him the 9's, would simple 40 watt NAD integrated (316Bee) be sufficeint to drive them in a small apartment setting?

It is college; they will be trashed! Too horrid a fate for such a fine speaker.

Sell the LSi9s, buy him some disposable speakers and get yourself the LSiMs.

I tend to agree. Though I do realize there are college students that aren't your stereotypical party animals.

I kinda realize that giving him the 9's is not the most prudent decision. I am just looking for any excuse to get the LSIms.

Good suggestion. I looked up the Cerwin-Vega VE-12F. It got really good customer reviews (all 5 stars) and Musician's Friend has them for $239 a pair!

You, sir, have just ended any debate regarding whether I should get the LSi7s or 9s. Thank you.

What if you made him buy his own speakers? I imagine he'd be more inclined to take better care of them. And you can keep both the LSi9s and get the LSiM 703.

He does work every summer but he barely makes enough money to last him throuhgout the school year. I have a soft spot for audio and feel it would be cruel and unusual punishment for him not have a stereo at college.

Buying him the Vega's will serve as a lesson for him to stay in school so he can afford to buy good quality audio equipment when he gets older.

What a dad. I was glad to have parents that helped with tuition. I had to make my own speakers (more because it was a fun project).

If my finances weren't so tight right now, I'd make an offer for your 9's in a heartbeat.

I did see RTi6 in CL for $55 in the CITY....it's a short drive....how about them?

Another option are some good old Polk R series speakers. They are inexpensive and sound great. You won't worry too much if they are trashed after some party.

That's what I would do. There are always RT7s, RT5s, RT55i, etc. in good shape on ebay that can be had for very little cash, and they sound great.

To say they're guaranteed to be trashed is a bit wrong. I've had my 25s since my sophomore year of college, but I kept them in my bedroom, and parties never ventured in there much so they were okay. I always put the grills on for the parties though.

Now, having just graduated, and having been one of those party animals that filled a 4-bed/4-bath/2-den apartment to the point of standing room only every other weekend, I'd say I've got a decent authority on this subject  I strongly advise you to snag him a pair of the older JBL Northridge floorstanders (E80 or E100), which you can get for relatively cheap, and will rock his apt without the worry of being knocked off of stands. My E50s got knocked off of their stands on occasion at my parties, hence my suggestion for a floorstander. I ended up setting them on my sub cabinets during parties (I ran 2 18s along with the E50s in my living room).

If you did give him the 9s, I would make sure they stay in his bedroom, and give him something with more oomph for the common space of his apt.

I would of got him some Monitor 10A's (with peerless tweeter if possible) and a Lava Lamp.....the LsiM are two levels above the Lsi, however, they do require higher end electronics to reep the full benefit.
