So, had a little present waiting for me when I got home from work! Something that will put just about anyone in a better mood  A Pair of Maggies!!! The Magnepan MMG to be more specific...

Just getting my ears on them now, but I love it! Not ROCK out speakers for sure by themselves, but I am loving them paired with the duak Epik Sentinel subs on low frequency duty. Now I just need my ICBM to get the low frequencies OFF of these things!!! They definitely "flap" for lack of better word if you push them playing music with low bass... The ICBM will remove those low freq from the maggies and I think clean them up a little bit, and give me a little more volume capability.

I heard they were a difficult speaker to drive, but I was not expecting to have to almost turn my pre all the way up to get to louder listening levels. But otherwise, the Parasound HCA-3500 drives them handily

Nonetheless, I am enjoying getting to know them. They should hold me over until I get my crossovers back for my SRS 2. Definitely a different listening experience. I can see myself keeping these and the SDA...

Yup, I have demo'd the 2.7QR's, MMG's & 3.6's. I personally just didnt get enough visceral bass from them (because they dont move air in the same way as box speakers).

But man oh man is their high and mid dead on. They are GREAT speakers, just not enough bass for me

Thinking my personal ticket speaker might be some Carver Amazings or Carver AL-III's.....

Still gotta get my ears on some to be sure...

Indeed it is my first pair of panels. Everyone keeps telling me I will end up with a pair of 3.6 or 3.7  After listening to these, I think they might be right!!! We will see. I have to take the wife on The Weezer Cruise first!!! Maybe in February or March of next year... These will have to hold me over until then.

Once I get the ICBM and I can truly integrate the subs into the system, I think these will really shine. I am hoping it will be here by next week. I would really like to get it all configured and setup before my Tonsillectomy!!!

    Glad you're enjoying them!

I currently switch between a pair of SDA-1C's and Magnepan 1.6's as my main speakers... plus I run a Parasound HCA-2200mkii, so we are in a few of the same boats!

There are things the SDA's do that the Maggies can't, and things the Maggies do that the SDA's can't, but, if I had to pick one, it would be the 1.6's for sure. I almost jumped on a pair of 3.6's last week, but I decided to play it more prudently financially.

You have to go big to get good bass out of a maggie... my 1.6's ain't bad at all, but I still do use a very tasteful sub with them. I probably wouldn't need a sub with the 3.6's, but that wouldn't be a reason to get them for me; the reason to get them would be for their true ribbon that sparkles in a different league from our quasis.

    Don't worry, not everyone does.

I did enjoy the pair I had though.

MMG/SMG are not hard to drive but they are most certainly the **** tease of that manufacturer. I don't know if you'll immediately get into the 3.x series but the 1.x is where you should go next. Get rid of the MMG's now. When you get a nice subwoofer to blend they should end up on top of your listening chart. I wouldn't call those Epik subs that great but you're stuck with 'em. The ICBM will help smooth out the response, so that's a good move.

I guess when I said hard to drive, I should have been more clear, I moreso meant inefficient. At 86 db / 2.83v, I have to crank the dial a lot further. I got great deals on the Epiks, and I know they aren't the greatest. The fact that they are ported is enough to make me want something else. I will have my eyes open for a pair of nice sealed high end subs, but not right now... I might even build something, we shall see.

The 1.x is nice, but the true ribbon in the 3.6 or 3.7 has me very intrigued. None of it is going to happen any time soon, and I got a GREAT deal on the MMG, so I really can't complain.

I always thought those epiks were really good subs for music ? Flat panel speakers always have you wondering "if these sound this good then the big boys must sound even better " . I never had any intention of spending alot on speakers but now I am way more than a few thousand into the hole and I keep nagging my wife "lets just spend another few grand it will be awesome " I have never done hard drugs but flat panel speakers must surely be the crack rock when it comes to speakers

Do you have any plans to do a HT setup in future with the maggies ? I think if you did you would really enjoy as they really bring out all the little bells and whistles on a bluray

I had the MMG's for a bit and found that they played the most realistic strings that I've ever heard. They didn't last for me due to the lack of impact for bass. My disclaimer is that I'm a bass-aholic. I had a sub to use with it, but it was a mediocre sub and it just could be integrated right. The sub was too slow and sloppy. The bass on the MMG is super tight and clean and fast, so you'll need a high end sub to get it to sound right.

You're in for a real treat with those mids and highs. Enjoy your new toy :)

Just enjoy them for what they are, an incredible transducer for the mids on up, you should be able to integrate a sub with the right crossover trial and error, there's lot's of info on the net with this, but use it as a guide, your room is different than other folks, using Maggies is an acquired taste, but one I like very much, I wouldn't trade my Martin Logan's for anything, it took awhile to get them right in the room, but I finally got some very decent bass with lot's of futzing around.

Keep them for a year, then move on up the ladder to bigger and better
