What Polk towers were sold ~ 1993 ?

Weird question for you guys. Around 1993, I listened to some Polk towers and thought they were the best speaker I'd ever heard. I'm trying to figure out what these might have been.

Around 4ft tall, wood grain cabinet exterior. Never took grill off. Don't remember if the grill covered the whole front face or not. Remarkable soundstage.

I searched briefly for a Polk model history synopsis (pointers anyone?), but couldn't find one. Any ideas what these might have been?

Thanks for any help,
Craig

Maybe one of the LS series towers? LS90's perhaps?

Like the S10? It's not near 4' tall.

+1 Forgot about those. Also possibly the RTA-15TL's. Those were about 4 feet.

About how wide was the front of the speaker? Was it wider than it was deep? Straight sides or tapered (LS style)?

Thanks for the responses guys! I will investigate these.

I remember going out to a retailer to test them and ended up getting some Hartleys built instead. When my Hartleys were stolen a few years later, I looked for those Polks again, but they were either discontinued or the shop that carried them had closed, not sure. Hartley had stopped building systems, and I had had children, so I ended up getting HT speakers and music was pretty much ignored until recently. So I thought I might revisit the mystery Polks as well as more recent lines.

    Thanks again,
    Craig

Click on the Products box at the top of the page and go to recent and vintage models at the bottom of the box. There you can see the pics of the older models and maybe find the ones that are what you're looking for.:)

Were the cabinets tapered (wider at the bottom)? If so then they are LS series. If not then probably RTA11TL or RTA15TL. The RTA15TL had a smooth (glass or plexiglass?) top.

Stan - you may want to chat up Zvonko about the RTA15TL. He was doing a lot of the voicing of these at that time. I had forgotten about that shiny plexiglas top. I remember it gave them fits in production due to scratches. Cheers.

I don't know about 93 but when I was in Germany a guy in the same housing area building bought a pair of Polk towers. IIRC they were very slim and maybe 4' tall or less. They sounded fantastic but it was the only pair the audio club had. This had to be between 1973 and 1976.

Mmm, yeah, i've been trying to recall. I'm leaning toward the non-tapered shape. Don't remember about cabinet top material. I'll have to look around to see if I can find the rta15tl's. Thanks!

We talked quite a lot about the RTA15TL when I consulted him about fixing up to my RTA11TL's, which he also voiced. He also mentioned "his" signature series SDA 1.2TL (I believe).

Absolutley the right choice! The 1C's blow away the RTA-15TL's IMO. I had the 1C's and RTA-15TL's side by side for a month or so and SDA wins hands down.

He may have had a hand in the soup on that one (the 1.2 's). But I believe that was just when they upgraded the tweeter to the SL3000.

Yes, apparently he worked on the redesign with the SL3000 when they became the TL. I believe he was also the lead engineer on the S series.

Thanks again for the great info & suggestions. I wanted some Polks for a new-old system I was building to get my feet wet in tubes and digital interface. I wanted to feed my music library into a decent vintage (read cheap-****) system. So here's what I ended up with:

Carver M500t amp bought here recently. Love this amp! Plenty of power for some decent but potentially thirsty Polks.

Maverick D1 tube DAC preamp hybrid thingie with upgraded tube (I don't know squat about tubes, but everyone seems to go for this upgrade). Seems to be well built. Started with CD (Rotel RCC-945) via coaxial, cables by Rich Schmetterer. Sound was very bright, harsh vocals on most cd's. Has settled nicely after two days of constant play. Great separation, detail, and soundstage; very rich and dynamic. Useful!

Squeezebox, connected via toslink, to music library on media drive. Aside from pre-existing wifi cutout problems, this is excellent! A 320kbps rip of Earth Wind & Fire's All' n' All gold remaster cd streamed thru the SB-optical-Maverick sounded as good as the CD-coax-Mav. Pandora, although streamed at 128 and not the higher Pandora One rate (192?) sounds sweet too. This is gonna be fun! There is some work to be done as many dupe songs were imported by SB. Not yet sure how best to clean this up. I'm also looking at non-iTunes solutions to file mgmt (Media Monkey, Spotify etc) if anyone has any advice?

Speakers - tried out several from vintage stuff on hand - Large Advents, Legacy II, 5002; HPM 900, 100, 40; Hartley H-200; Mission, Klipsch, Dynaco, & Polk books - and here's the weird thing - the Legacy II's, my least favorite of those 3 Advents, sounded unbelievable. This was while the Maverick was still in harsh stages and, I guess, the brightness was mitigated just the right amount. They continue to match up beautifully. At least I thought so until they were replaced with hotness.

Polk SDA 1C's. My son had bought some SDA SRS2's from local Polkie TonyM, passing on SDA 1C's which I loved as well. So, I jumped on those for this system. Oh my! Not sure if it could get much better than this without a lot more money. At least by my standards. Earth Wind & Fire, Clapner, Fleetwood Mac, Stereolab, Neil, Herbie Hancock, Steely Dan, Sade, Dire Straits, ELO - I wanted to devour everything, but I couldn't stop listening to what was on - it was just so perfect. *Full* range, deep rich bass, dynamic, and an absolutely magical soundstage. Thank you Tony!

So that's my new-old system. This weekend I'll try out headphones and patching into some Pioneer SX and Marantz silvers for different color. I like the Maverick so much, I might have to look at those Chinese tube amps now. Thanks for shoppin'!

Congrats! Sounds like you've put together a nice system. Beauty of it is, you can stop now and enjoy, or slowly start tweaking the bits. Those 1C's will respond nicely to any mods talked about so often here on the forum. Probably best to sit back and enjoy for a while!

Nice system Craig, try not to play mp3's if you can and go for FLAC encoded files. You're missing a lot by using mp3's, even higher bit rate mp3's don't come close to the real cd or FLAC encoded files which are bit for bit perfect copies of the original .wav file.

Enjoy and definitely read up on the x-over refreshing and the RD0 tweeters. I have modded 1C's and they take it to a whole other level. But as stubby suggests just E-N-J-O-Y!

Max is loving his SDA-SRS2's I could tell from his smiles and comments.

Those tweeters are not that bad at all for now are they. I could've lived with them for along time but...I still need to downsize some don't I...:frown::smile:
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

It's been a tough trade-off call for me so far. I've got 60k songs and haven't started ripping jazz, classical, or vinyl. A lot of that is bit torrent @ 320 or flac converted to 320 then discarded. This has allowed me to have more good quality music on the road and at the beach.

Since I have been using iTunes with its inherent problems with flac, I only rip lossless albums I know I'll play more than a few times in the future. I have been satisfied with 320, but that was on lesser systems and ipods. Once I get out of iTunes, I will re-rip my favorite cd's to flac. But for now those old lp's are crying to be ripped, and as long as I'm going to all that trouble, they'll be lossless. Any advice on music file managers?

I'll definitely look into the mods for the 1C's. Is there a consensus on the rings benefiting 1c's as well?

But for now, I will definitely enjoy all that music I used to love so.

Nothing wrong with mp3's for portability, etc. They just really don't belong on the hifi rig.

Media Monkey is what I use and it's an incredible music file manager and a whole lot more. You can even sync with your iPod.

The rings have helped my Polk Monitor 5B's in the office rig. As soon as I get some spikes for the 1C's I'll be adding the rings all in one shot.

Love Media Monkey. Thanks, H9, for the swell advice.

Now on to mods and ripping. The best thing about ripping lp's is I will get to listen to stuff I haven't heard since the 80's. Should be fun!

Switched out the tweeters. Wow! Beautiful!

Spikes and rings up next. In the meantime I'll practice the xo mods on another speaker before I get in too deep with these guys.

Thanks to everyone for the excellent guidance.

        Cheers!
