I just found a safe!

So...my son and I go for a quick float down the Spoon River. It's our first trip on this river so we packed light just to float and no fishing poles.

Anyway, We get 50 yards down the river and find a stolen safe. The town library had 2 fund raisers (as I'm told) and the entirety of the funds were in the safe.

A window was broken this weekend and the safe plus other items were lifted.

Guess well have to float tomorrow instead. Maybe some new gear is on the horizon with some reward (fingers crossed) money:smile:

If ya do get a reward, don't forget to split it with your ship mate, as a good pirate would.

Check this out....That little bugger said

"Hey Dad, If (we) get a reward ca I have 25%?"

Priceless! lol You know he will! He held the boat from traveling downstream while I rolled it over and checked it out. Hell definitely get his portion!

No way! We found one on the Yadkin river a few months back, wish we would have had the camera to prove it. The one we saw had the hinges chiseled off, and had been cleaned out, I still reported it to the local police, but the officer I talked to said that the river was 'no mans land' because it is the border between our two towns. Typical lazy cop crap. Was the safe intact?

Semi on topic? What do you float? We've got a Mad River Adventure 14, I've seen a nice new Old Town that has some similar features. I'd like to try it. I think we may like to step up to a 16 footer for the space.

It was completely intact! the handle was broken but it was unopened.

This time we had the little bass boat (pelican) as the water is awful dirty and we hadn't been down that water before. The sacrificial pvc craft lol. I have a Willies but would never put it in this water. I think my favorite boat of all time (electric anyway) is a Coleman Ram-X scanoe with a 55 lb Minn Kota. I've had that thing trout fishing in places God saved for himself!

The news was there so I'll get pics eventually. I had my phone but left it on the bank as I had to go swimming to retrieve the treasure.

I'll only believe your story now unless you post a news article, with video, your photo ID held up to the camera, and your sons birth certificate!

    Just kidding, nice find.

I wish they could find the people who broke into a library, and hang them. Library's should be sacred institutions, that aren't abused. I may be a little harsh on this issue, but thats my stance.

The wife called the reporter (I had the reporter call my wife so we have her #) and see if she'll e-mail the photos. I'd like to have a copy myself.

You gotta be a real dirtbag to rip off a library. I mean, honestly ...a library? Especially with the towns (schools) fund raiser money? What and asshat! Actually it had to be two people involved, it was pretty heavy and was down stairs in the basement so 1 guy carrying it up the stairs is unlikely.

Nice little story SDA1C especially having your son involved. I am convinced he will remember his adventure with his dad through his entire lifetime. Please do post pics of the adventure and of course do not forget to post pics of dad and son by the treasure find. Good story!

Unfortunately for pics I'm at the mercy of the reporter. We called a wrecker to hoist it up the bridge. I was at water level rigging it up and they hustled it away before I got out of the water. I will post what I get when I do though that's for sure.

The wife brought the girls with her so it was a Dad fest when I got topside. I know you are right about them remembering it. My boy said "Sooo. what if we find another safe tomorrow?" LOL. Out of the mouths of babes!

I'm with you! It is nice to know there are decent people in the world teaching their children to be decent people too! I strive hard everyday to be that for my children and among all the crap we see in the world, this sticks out like a sore thumb.

I got word from the library that they had deposited the funds seemingly the night before it was stolen. So the reporter (sister of a library clerk) was mistaken as to the amount inside. There was only a couple hundred bucks in cash (over due book charges). However, there were many, many $ in stamps (I think it was the stamp stash for the city) that got destroyed along with some other valuable documents that can't be replaced.

All things being equal I dont expect to see much other than some smiles from the local town folk and a bunch of hands to shake:smile: but thats good enough for us as all we wanted was to float the river anyway. We were just happy to be able to help.

Why would you expect anything other than a smile? I mean, and perhaps I'm missing something, but why would anyone expect, much less accept a reward for something like this? I mean, it ain't like you found Daddy Warbucks wallet....

I dunno, as a society, are we at a point where just being a decent, honest human being merits a cash premium?

    I don't "expect". That's why I said "I don't expect".

Guess you had to be there for the "holy crap I wonder whats in it" discussion before we found out it was the library's.

Accept a reward!? Hell ya! I'd accept a reward. No question about it. Besides who said it would be cash? If it belonged to a local land owner maybe I could get some hunting time or access to a the local hunt/fish club.

I did my good deed for the day and that's that. If It returns dividends then that's a bonus. I turned it in cause it was the right thing to do. Ironically I had the tools to cut that **** open, in a New York minute, in my truck.

Yes....Because it's (decency, honesty) so RARE these days!!

GRATITUDE has largely slipped away from society as well!!
Your reasoning is one example for proof, my daughter is an example also I'm embarrased to admit but she's a step daughter so my genes aren't into play there. They might not have made a difference anyway but we'll never know.

Here's the link to the news article. The story is a bit off though (go figure).

I don't tell my wife to do much, It lets me sleep at night knowing I have a better chance of waking up in the morning hehe. I did call her to get the number to the sheriffs office. The trustee and I didn't eventually do anything lol. We picked it up out of the water and rolled it over the edge of the boat. I know they are small differences but I like to keep facts in order.

BTW I'm the one in the white shirt not the dude in the orange suit lol!

Bizarre! WTF would anyone knock over a FREE public library?
Based on the timing, it sounds like an inside job.
    Which is really, REALLY sad!

well giving the safe back was of course better than not giving it back...I dunno crossing your fingers hoping for a reward...a public safe...with school funds...

I once saw some cash fall out of a mans side pocket as he pulled his hand from it...turns out it was folded in half 100 dollar bills I picked them up and hollered for him to stop...he offered, I declined.....shaking a mans hand was reward enough, but that is just me.

I've never been to Wyoming, but I have been to Kewanee plenty of times I believe. Don't they have a huge furniture store there, used to have a female spokesperson in the commercials? Hmmm... I can't remember her name, Jewel? Tell me I'm not crazy?

I'm glad he offered....That's the thing to do. Then if you take a reward or refuse it is another thing. I was taught to accept a reward if offered for it makes the giving person feel great also.

I don't know her name but I think your speaking of Good's Furniture.

Brave is being nice! We went down today on the trip we planned on yesterday. I can say with out 1 stitch of uncertainty that it won't happen again. We went about 8 miles and I think I wasted a set of waders doing it. I found a stretch about 1/2 mile long 50 ft wide and 10-12 ft deep that was loaded with catfish. It's no more than 100 yards up stream and around a few corners from a very busy bridge that doesn't lend launching a boat or foot traffic so I figure that stretch hasn't been fished much. I might give that a run but the whole float thing has seen it's one and only trip.

I got myself through by singing the song "I love that muddy water" in my head lol

Get a hard copy of that article for your son, I am convinced he'll cherish the memory of this little adventure with his father for his entire life. A simple adventure like this will make you his hero for his lifetime (not counting that you provided him a good example of honesty and integrity).
