Something new,,,,,another receiver thread

My 7 year old Integra 7.6 is about to give up the ghost. Very bad distortion on warm up. I've never been happy with either the video or sound for DVDs or Blue Ray. Two channel audio is good. I know the Elites are highly thought of here and I can afford one but right now I'm looking at the Pioneer VSX 1021 and the Yamaha 671. I'm not concerned with two channel performance with these receivers and I'm not interested in what other little electronic devices the receiver supports. I want to hear from those of you have actually used one of these in a HT. What is your opinion of the sound and video on DVDs?
Thanks. Don
Edit: I know the Pioneer has 5 preouts but I'm not sure about the Yamaha. I have a 5 channel power amp that I'd like to use but Yamaha usually puts out more power than Pioneers and has more current capability so I'm thinking I may be able to use it alone.
Thanks. Don

Budget?
I don't think you'll be happy if you drop down from an amp to your AVR unless you get a serious AVR. It also sounds like HDMI for you is a must if your not happy with your current BR or DVD playback. I'd go Pio purely on the fact that you'll get HDMI and pre-outs so you can use your current amp.
Just looked at the 1021, from what I understand, no pre-outs on it? I think your going to have to step up to the 1120, like I said, if you already have the amp I wouldn't go with anything that didn't have pre-outs. -

I think the 1021 has 7 pre outs. I would consider one of the Pioneer Elites.
I don't really have a budget but my experience with the longevity of some receivers I'd like to stay below $2000........$1500 would be better. Amazon has the SC37 for <$900. I like to buy where I can get absolutely hassle free returnsTO ERR IS HUMAN. TO FORGIVE IS CANINE. -
Ah, both the 671 and 1021 which you stated in your first post we're 400/500ish. If your looking to spend that kind of coin and not use your amp, the 37 would be a great contender, I'm more than happy with my 25. Whatever way you go in that range will be great. IF you can score a 37 for less then 900, jump on it, excellent price. That is a serious unit.

And if you do step up to the 1120 you will only get 47 watts a channel with 5 driven (Home Theater Bench Test). Even the "upper line" Yamaha Aventage RX-A1000 only tested at 54 watts. You will definitely need pre-outs with any modern receiver except maybe the pricier stuff.Sony 60'' SXRD 1080p

Costco has the SC35 for $750. Don't get any more hassle free then them. Hell - you could use it for a year and return it and they wouldnt even blink65" Sony X900 (XBR-65X900E)

They have a decent price but.
Their web site says returns must be made within 90 days. They're not an authorized dealer for the Elite. What happens a year or so down the road?TO ERR IS HUMAN. TO FORGIVE IS CANINE. -
I would expect to use an additional amp. as I am now with the Integra. What I'm looking for the receiver with the best video and sound processing with pre outs and that will pass HDMI from a BD player through the receiver to the TV I had one of the Pioneers and returned it to Amazon because of no/intermittent sound in one channel. I think it was the 1021 unless there's a 1031.......anyway it had >5 preouts the same as my Integra but the picture I see of the 671 doesn't show that many.

That's right - nevermind the year thing. I believe they changed that fairly recently (within the last year). They used to have a no-questions-asked return policy that was good for a year. I think they probably had too many "renters" of TV's and such.
So I wonder how places like Costco get these receivers? Do they just order them through a 3rd party warehouse? Or can they still buy them through Pio and just not be authorized?65" Sony X900 (XBR-65X900E)

Not sure it's this way now but it used to be that Pioneer and many other electronic sellers often used independent distributors that sell a lot of different brands (like beer / liquor distributors). You can't prevent an independent from selling to whomever but you can control the "pass thru" warranty thing (and actually there is some question about even that depending on state you live in).Sony 60'' SXRD 1080p
