I am introducing my friend to the POLK world via RTI10, FXIA4 and CSIA6. we are planning on installing FXIA4 on his back wall since his couch is right up to the back wall. do the speakers must be in horizontal orientation(directing the sound towards the side walls) or vertical orientation(directing the sound down and reflecting on the ceiling) ?

Thanks. do the surround effects work even though the couch is right against the wall? Coz, the the viewer will be sitting right under the speakers. Or is it a good idea to install them on the sidewalls with dipole configuration?

    This is Polk's recommendation: http://www.polkaudio.com/education/showanswer.php?question_num=78
If your seating area adjoins the rear wall, or if you cannot place speakers on the side wall, you'll have to position the speakers on the rear wall. In this case, we recommend bi-directional (bi or di-pole) speakers, since they will produce the most diffuse effect.
