I understand TBone, no worries. I wasn't sure what you meant is all. I believe that history should play a part in decision making but in the end its how they sound, no argument there.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I actually had two different Cambridge speaker systems. I originally got the 2-channel stereo setup with credit card points. It was a great deal and has a powered subwoofer with an integrated amp in a nice ported wood veneer enclosure with both analog & digital inputs. That's the one I still use.
I also bought the 5.1 surround set-up that was exactly the same except it only had analog inputs but the amp went out on it after a few years of use.
The digital one sounded a little better anyway but the analog 5.1 wasn't bad either. Don't let the size of the satellites fool you. They produce some "big" sound and the sub thumps the walls.
So now I have the digital stereo setup with 5 spare satellite speakers.
If anyone needs a replacement Cambridge satellite speaker let me know. I'll give you one if you have the system and are in need.
Here's a pic of my setup taken a couple years ago. I have upgraded to a larger monitor and newer printer since this was taken but everything else is the same. It's what I'm typing this post with right now.
Everything is on an Anthrocart 36" mobile PC workstation. I looked for a while before I found the Anthro and am glad I got it. The best PC cart there is IMO. The quality is superb and there are tons of optional accessories.
If you look, you can see the subwoofer sitting on the right side of the lower shelf. The power/volume knob is mounted underneath the top shelf. I got the optional PC tower side mount, speaker shelves and scanner shelf for the Anthro. I also have the optional metal cup holder but not in this pic.
The system is a Dell XPS 3.6 gHz processor with Soundblaster Audigy Platinum and external digital drive bay with analog & digital input/outputs in RCA, Optical & SPDIF 24bit/96kHz.
It also has a 4-bay hot-swapable SATA RAID tower with unilane card and dual DVD-RW drives. I'm connected to the web via a 30gbps cable modem.
I'm in the process of building a new HTPC. Plans for the HTPC include an Origen touch-screen enclosure with a 15-bay (30+ terabyte) unilane hot-swapable RAID tower and Blu-Ray RW drive connected to the SC-09TX via HDMI.
I'll post up some pics once I complete it. -
I'll echo some of what others have said.
Proximity to the speakers is a big deal. Studio monitor bookshelf speakers are designed for near-field placement. Typically they are designed around minimizing diffraction.
I set out to find a replacement for typical PC speakers a year ago. I picked up a pair of studio monitor KRK Rockit5 G2's for about $300. I LOVE THEM! Built in amps, several input options, and most of all great sound.
Here is my setup:
I have tried some HT bookshelf speakers in the past and not been pleased with the fatigue caused by close quarters listening.
Word of warning, studio monitors are designed to play audio without coloration. They play pretty flat from top to bottom. A few EQ adjustments dialed them in to my taste. My HT Gallery
