An Audio Neophyte And His Oddly Shaped Room

All-

I am finishing my basement and have a small 12x12 tv area to work with.

The left hand side of the room has the staircase down into the basement, a hallway and an open area that leads into the bonus room. The rear wall will be a half wall that's about 40 inches tall.

I realize this isn't ideal acoustically, but with 4 kids the basement space needs to be made to fit them not poor old dad and his AV set up.

I'm looking at going in ceiling for the rear SS speakers (planning to set up 7.1 for future expansion) and am looking at the RC65is for that purpose.

For the front I was looking at a center speaker sound matched with them, but only the legacy monitor series is listed as far as I can tell. And then likely more 65s for the front speakers.

I called polk and they said that I could use R65s all the way around for all speakers. Of this I'm skeptical as I've read that the center speaker is the key to the whole set up and I'm not sure the 65s will be adequate in that regard.

Questions:

1. Given the size of the room what speaker set up would you recommend? This job is VERY price sensitive so keep that in mind
2. Will it work to use the 65s for all speakers? If not, what center speaker matches up with them the best?
3. Are there other alternatives you can think of that I've not mentioned?

Thank you SO much.

    Welcome to CP Cherry !

Sorry I can not help but there are plenty people here who can.

I would not disregard Polks advise though.

They have great CS and are usually up on all things Polk.

I have heard a friends setup that is similar. His room might be a bit more rectangular but otherwise about the same.

He has in ceiling speakers for all the channels in a 5.1 setup including an in-wall sub. I have to say it sounds pretty darn good. The center channel is clear and crisp and overall I wouldn't mind doing that myself.

Is there a reason you don't want to use in-wall speakers for the fronts?

How tall are your ceilings? I wouldn't do all in ceiling speakers in a low ceiling room. I would guess it needs to be at the least 7' high. My friends is about 8' high and like I said it sounds great. If it were shorter I would suggest in-wall for the fronts and ceiling everywhere else.

Mostly out of my own ignorance I guess. I'd heard that the center is the most important speaker and the in ceilings don't seem to be designed 'specifically' for being center speakers so I didn't want to mess up...

    About 8 feet.

Why not the RC65i's for the back 4( you can start with 2 and add another 2 later) and then do some RTI bookshelves and CSI a3 or a use CSI 3 for your center. You should be able to fit the bookshelves in on either side of the TV and depending on what kind of stand you have the TV on you can hopefully fit in the center channel somewhere.

The RC65i's are supposed to match with the CSI center speakers according to the polk website, and the CSI center speaker matches the RTI line.

However, it is strange because even though they match it up with CSI center speaker, on the bottom of the page they say it matches up with "Monitor" series which is the CS I/CSII Cs10/CS20 and the Monitor/TSI line.

    Anyways:

Front Center Surround Subwoofer MSRP USA* MSRP Canada*
    RC65i CSi3 RC55i PSW303 $1249.80 $0.00
    RC65i RC65i RC65i PSW303 $1559.80 $0.00
    RC65i CSi5 RC65i PSW505 $1869.80 $0.00
