Mini Maggies

So this is a pretty cool concept for near field listening at a computer desk:

http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/mini-maggie-system-honey-i-shrunk-speakers

It solves 2 of my problems, I normally am waaaayyyy to close to the speaker to be in the sweet spot of any floorstanders, and dont have the space for any of the regular Magneplanar speakers (including the MMG's). I realize there are lots of powered options (KRK, AudioEngine), and even some passive (LSi 7's, LSi 9's), but after hearing NooshinJohns MMG's I really wanted a nice set of Maggies for my office/2 channel rig.

Only drawback is you for sure need some decent power so running them off an integrated is probably not an option.

Very cool, but the cost is a bit above what I allow for my secondary office rig. Plus I'm guessing a pretty beefy amp is required not my barely above flea powered tube integrated's I'm using now.

Certainly something to keep in mind.

Yup, it definately needs some good current and wattage.

But for those like me who will probably be stuck w/ a office/2 channel rig in a small bedroom or den for a very long time, it gives us a pretty good option.

Especially if they sound like the 3.8's which are a MASSIVE speaker in comparison.

They are so cute. I can't imagine any bottom end but then you could always use a sub.

It's a 3 pc system with a ribbon bass unit, but you're right I'd want to see what the lower limit is.

Correct, the pics show the 2 left/right speaker parts. The sub is 22 x 19 x 1.25 so it hopefully should have a "somewhat" decent output, but what the lower limit is who knows...

    Very cool.

I love my 1.6's. Got my eye on some 1.7's.

I have always thought Maggies sounded better near-field than a lot of other loudspeakers, so I'm not suprised that they do so well up close.
What I AM suprised at is that they went with the true ribbon tweeters instead of the quasi's that are in the 1.7's, mg12's, and mmg's.

The true ribbon adds greatly to the expense factor that h9 mentioned, and I agree, that for many, an office system is generally a secondary system. Most would be fine with the quasi's and their cheaper price, especially if they're using secondary gear to drive them.

That being said, if you want the best sound possible, the true ribbons are the way to go, and there's no doubt that this system SOUNDS better than a system based off the quasi's would; however, just because it SOUNDS better does not mean it will SELL better.

BTW, now that the 1.7s are out, a used pair of 1.6's for the roughly 800 bucks that they now fetch is THE best deal on the two channel speaker market right now. Hands down.

Love them but prefer the simplicity of my current near field setup. I'm not about to add an integrated again.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

haha I tried to edit it, but it was too late. I meant it more as a jab to ML than as a proclamation the Magnlepan was truly the best American speaker company.
