Monitor 10's

I ahve a set of 10's I bought years ago. They are sounding strange lately and need some r and r. I think one of the tweeters is dead. Is there a post around or can someone tell me how to test them? I don't use them much any more but lately one of my 13 year old twins has gotten into listening to music. I need to replace the ancient reciever that I have had for years too. (It has scratches when you adjust the volume.) Any advise on trouble shooting the speaker problem woudl be great. I bought them new in the late 80's or early 90's and am really attached to them.

welcome to the forums xjghost, If they have a fuse check those first.I believe they are 1amp fuses, that's about the extent of my trouble shooting knowledge. . Put monitor 10s in the search, it came with over 11 pages of information.Maby you can get more from there, when I got one pair of monitor7s the tweeter didn't work, I replaced the fuse and It worked.There are some smart people here I hope they can help you more than I could. In addition to the aforementioned advice...swap the tweeters and see if the problem follows the driver.

Fuse = 1A 250v

As far as the static issue, clean the potentiometer. Get a nice quality contact cleaner like Caig CaiKleen A/V but your best bet is to invest in this....

I do not see a fuse on them. Swapped the tweeters and the "bad" or flat sound stayed.

I hooked my reciever up to another set of speakers and the "flat" sound is in them too. I am guessing my ancient reciever is about to bite the bullet. I was thinking a Denon 5.1 with about 100 watts or so might be a good replacement and not break the bank. Any sugestions?

Play with the pots and see if anything clears up. I had this problem with an old Marantz and all it took was some Dexoit.

If you go with a new receiver, I'd go with one that has pre-outs for each channel. This will allow you to add external amplifiers as you feel is necessary. It makes a huge difference.

Had not thought about that.... but then again by the time I can afford that many amps it will be needing replacing. LOL! I'll see what is out that then. I live in a rural area of South Carolina so my looking has been limited to the net and Best Buy.

OK an update. I ended up getting a new receiver. Not what I wanted but what I could afford. It is the receiver that is acting up. My new Denon sounds great. I have to figure all this surround stuff out though. I have a new problem. I have all my sources, xbox, ps3, cable, going to the TV and an optical cable to the receiver. While watching a blue ray this weekend I noticed it sounds like there is an echo. I don't have anything for a center channel yet and the surrounds are going to have to be replaced and mounted because of the way the room is. Any thoughts on what to look into with the receiver to make it sound right?

Need to know what receiver you got besides Denon? You probably have some kind of effect on like hall or club that is making it sound like an echo.

Reciever is decent for movies but sucks for listening to music in the house. Need to find something reasonably priced and that can run my polk's like my old Keenwood did. Denon's new 75wpc is weak at best. Any recomendations on used gear that is a bargain woudl be great. I was thinking some 80's or 90's Adcom or Yamaha or Onkyo...

I have had this problem with my television when I had the tv speakers and the speakers running through the receiver both on. The way I fixed it was to go into my television's menu and select 'internal mute' or something like that - it shut off the tv speakers but kept the sound running out of the line outs to the stereo.

Another thing you could try would be to run all of your sources through your Denon AVR, and use it as a video pass-through to your TV. Maybe that will eliminate the echo by having the AVR to all the processing of sound and video signal itself.

Oh the echo is the tv and the stero being up. Solution was to turn the tv down all the way. I really think I need a amp preamp to be happy listening to music on the polks. Been looking around ebay lately to see what was out there for less then $500. I inhereted a haffler 500 but it appers to have a problem. I'll know more later in teh week I hope.

Ok Thought I would update this thread. I got the Haffler 500 fixed. $100... not bad imho. Bought an Onkyo P-301 pre amp for $71 + shipping and have my Technics 1400 turntable for $75 playing through it and its all sounds amazing! So I built a basic vinyl system for about $300.00 which I dont think is bad at all. I have clipped the Hafler already which tells me its either too old or not powerful enough for my taste. LOL!
