Can a blown speaker NOT sound blown?
NO, this isn't a sexual joke of sorts.....
I sat down to watch some TV the other day and noticed some crackling sound from one of the speakers. The volume was fairly minimal, but the sound wouldn't go away. I went up and put my ear right next to each driver, and sure enough one of them is making a static sound that none of the others are. I had pretty much determined the problem to be that one driver.
Then I start playing my music (techno/trance/house stuff) and at volumes MUCH MUCH louder than what I was watching the TV at, but there was ZERO crackling sound coming from that driver. It has as much sound coming out of it as it's counterpart on the other speaker, so I'm a bit confused...........any ideas?

brett,
You're running 70's, right? And when you say "driver", you're refferring to one of the mid-woofers?More later,

RT16's.......it's the middle driver.....
EDIT: I've been playing a lot more music and there are times that even when listening to my techno it still makes the sound(but I can only hear it if I'm RIGHT at the speaker, unlike when watching TV).....I guess that it is totally blown, but what REALLY pisses me off is that I just had these in a few months ago for their final check-up and of course they worked perfectly........NOW it decides to blow.........damn damn damncomment comment comment comment. bitchy. -
Agree with you, it's probably a goner.
Since it's only one driver, cant' attribute noise to a source. YOu probably just drowned out the noise with the louder music earlier.
Power and with your fingers/ thumb spread evenly around the edge of the cone gently press on the "bad" driver. Listen for rubbing and get a feel for any "dragging". Then do same to the good driver for comparision.More later,

Pisser is that it's JUST outta warranty.....(wonder if they'll replace it for me since it's so close)
Good thing is that I have 2 other pair to use as parts and replace the driver for instant improvement. Only thought about doing that is putting a driver that has different playing habits. Maybe that doesn't matter at all though.......comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -

not to hijack a thread but what if u hear dragging but the speakers sound fine? -
Sounds like Voice coil starting to rub. I take it you swapped speaker cables or interconns to verify, and it happens on all sources?
Call Ken in the am, get the hookup.

Definitely check the cables, they will do that sometimes. Swap speakers if that's easier and see if the crackling follows.
