You say you want another choice besides Oppo? Meet the new Yamaha BD-A1010

If you want a Blu-ray player capable of playing SACD and/or DVD-A through its multi-channel analog outputs, you're kind of limited to Oppo and Cambridge Audio (at a higher price point). Well, here's another choice....

Yamaha announces the new BD-A1010 universal player

Yes, I know Denon and Marantz have similarly-priced universal players, but they don't have analog multi-channel outputs.

Yeah, but I like the Oppo's ability to use its 2 HDMI out's to send audio out over one, and video out over another.

This one does look really really nice though.

I wonder about that too, but the owner's manual is not available yet.

Yep.Can't find whose DAC is in it by the specs.

A good thing about Oppo is that they update their firmware pretty quickly as needed.... Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for Yamaha... That would be a deal killer for me.

The BD-A1010 was announced last week, so I expect Yamaha will update its US website as time goes on. My guess would be Burr-Brown.

No problem. I figure the Yamaha will get discounted, which may make a difference for some in a buying decision vs. the non-discounted Oppo.

I hear ya' Danny, a lot of people just can't afford the higer end, higher priced units and have to go with something cheaper and more affordable. Didn't Sony bring out a new universal machine last year?

Already being discounted 20%, w/free shipping at Audioholics store:

Tempting, but I'd like to see some user reviews first.

"Cheap" is my middle name

Sony will never support DVD-A, so no universal player will ever be introduced by them. On the other hand, Sony did introduce a line of inexpensive players that will play SACDs. They start at about $150.00 (went down to about $100.00 during X'mas shopping season last year) and has been very positively reviewed (UK's Hi-Fi News called the $150.00 Sony BDP-S370 the "Bargain of the Century" in its October '10 issue after reviewing its CD/SACD performance).

I think Amazon will have an even lower price once they list it. They usually beat Audioholics by quite a bit.

I already have SACD players, so I'm also considering the new BD-S671, which can be had around $200. Be nice to have it all in one package though.

I am between the Oppo 93, the Sony S-780, and possibly this....but I'll wait to December to do any serious price-shopping.
