Do you guys think it would be crazy to sell all my old Onkyo HT-S6200 HTiaB stuff (minus the receiver, so 7 speakers and a subwoofer) and stick with 3.1 with the new speakers and subwoofer for a few months until i could afford surrounds? (Monitor70s + CS2 + PSW505 probably)

It'd be an upgrade for sure even if it's 3.1, i'd honestly sell the receiver too those 70's will need more than that to sound right.

That's a tough one. I'd lean more towards "don't do it". It's tough to compare HTiB receivers, but I'm a little worried about the 6-ohm rating. Generally that's more of a marketing gimmick (not all of the time, but usually it's either a gimmick or high end, and I know where my bet is)

You can't go wrong with the speakers you have chosen, and the receiver will power them, but I would say that's you're weakest link at this point.

Maybe sell the whole system for $250-$300 on CL or something, add that to your current funds and see what happens? You can get a decent enough receiver, with preouts for the future and keep it around there.

**Edit after reading B Runs (just to clarify) - I would definately get yourself a new front soundstage. But I'd put more importance of getting a receiver before getting new rears. Just my .02

I think that's a great idea. Sometimes you have to simplify with a smaller, better rig, so you can save up for the one you really want. There's nothing wrong with going 3.1 for now.

A Monitor based HT would be awesome compared to what you're currently using with the Onkyo. After you get the surrounds...go for a new AVR that is ready for the next time you upgrade the speakers again. Always go bigger than you need when you shop for an AVR and you may even find a smoking deal on a year or two old Onkyo TX-SRxxx series at that point.

Glowrdr, i totally thought it was 8 ohms. Would it be ok if its 6 ohms? I dont really play my stuff too loud. I just dont want to get the speakers and have the AVR not even power them.

Alright, do you guys recommend the PSW505? I want to order it tonight so i have all my stuff by the weekend.

This is what you are recommending?:

Sell old speakers and sub (7.1 system)-->buy new speakers and sub (move to 3.1 system)----(eventually)--->buy new AVR---->buy new surrounds

This is gonna be pretty crazy. Thanks a ton!

It depends on what price you get the PSW505 for....the MUCH better subwoofer is the new DSW Pro line from Polk.

OK, no problem Kazaam. That's still a great subwoofer as far as Polk subs go and probably the best ones from that whole 8 year span.

Nothing wrong with going 3.1 for awhile. My buddy did this for a good while and trust me he really enjoyed the setup over what he had before.

Haha, i dont really want to, but people keep telling me that if im going to get a new sub i might as well get something really good. Thats the only thing i have seen thats decent; people are recommending subs at a minimum of $500! I just dont know what to do, ahhhhhh! I have time though, i think id rather not sell all my stuff just quite yet and buy the psw505 (at least right now). that'd give me some breathing room payment wise.

I understand, as Polk's reputation in subwoofers sucks historically. That being said, the PSW505 is one of the better subwoofers that they made in the last decade. The new lineup throws all that bad history to the side as they're all solid and worthy of being an option again.

If you chose a subwoofer that's not that great, we would say so and you're no exception.

About the 6/8 Ohm, I wouldn't worry too much. I don't have the direct conversion in your case, but here is an example from a Pioneer receiver. It is listed as 160x7 @ 6 Ohms, or 130x7 @ 8 Ohms.

With yours being 130 watts per channel, I'd assume 100-110 per channel (which really isn't the true rating anyways, but it's considered apples to apples in this scenerio)

As for the PS505 - I'd sy it's a safe bet. I'd actually get that over the other one you linked to, but that's just personal preference. I have not heard the STF2, so I cannot comment on that. But I can tell you 1) I'd take a 300 watt 12" sub over a 200 watt 10" sub (yes, there are some exceptions to my theory, but I don't feel this is one of them); and 2) The upgrade will be leaps and bounds over what you have now, so you will not have any "what-ifs" anytime soon no matter which way you go.

I don't think it would be crazy at all...

I started my HT system out like you and never looked back! Start with the 3.1 or 3ch and look/save for what you really want.
