These are considered legendary machines, if it's in working condition I would think you'd be able to sell it at that price,maybe more if you have the factory shipping box and to the right buyer.

I wouldn't call that model legendary. I'd see if you could get it cheaper but you may have to do some work on it just to get it up to spec. You shouldn't just jump into R2R without knowing something ahead of time Larry.

Not sure why you would want a 4 track reel to reel either? I would just get a 2 track, unless you plan on doing some recording or if you plan on listening to quadraphonic recordings. My brother owns one of these decks and I've heard the Moody Blues "Days of Future Past" in quadraphonic and it sounds phenominal! But, inless you plan on doing that, I would just suggest an X-10R or X-1000R or X-2000R (although the last two decks go for more money than $175.00) $175.00 is a relatively good deal for that model assuming it's in good shape (heads, capstan, motors, etc.). If you are looking for a reel to reel deck though for just listening to standard stereo tapes, I would simply suggest a 2 track machine (IMO).

If it sold within an hour at that price, it most likely was in great shape, too bad your friend missed it, they're pretty common though. I have one, it's a pretty cool rig. I also have the expanded OM and SM. Sam Palermo in Chicago Il is the go to Teac guy for repairs and parts.

Yeah he was wanting it to tinker with but wasn't sure about the cost, I was like your asking the wrong guy. I have enough audio stuff that takes up my time let alone a reel 2 reel.

Your buddy sounds pretty cool, RtR's are great to tinker with, nothing quite like the look of big 10" reels spinnin', big VU's dancin', and that wonderful sound they make, the 3 I have will never be for sale

Take a nasty early 80's CD and record it on a nice TDK GX or Audua reel at 7 3/4isp and it will sounds a helluva lot better!

I jut bought a Teac A3340S for 200 bucks. The seller had a tech go through the machine and everything is working well.
I have an internet radio station and bought the machine believe it or not to do voiceover and production work for others as well
as my internet station. With good quality tape and running at 15IPS speed,the machine has virtually NO TAPE HISS.

I owned one of these back in the day and paid about $1.000.00 for it. You can do things on a 3340 you CANNOT do with a simple
two track machine. I can lay my music bed on 2 tracks in stereo,then, go back and do my voicework on one of the tracks and pan that track to the center. The 4th track can be used for special effects. All of this is possible with a 3340

Why would I want a reel to reel as opposed to Adobe Audition? Because Adobe is very hard to learn and I don't like taking up hard
drive space with Adobe which requires ALOT of space on your computer. I have recorded up to ten tracks of music on a 3340 with no track going over 2nd generation which is hardly noticeable on my big studio monitors.I won't go through the sequence as to how to do this on this post. But,if anyone is interested on HOW to do it, I can answer that question if you e-mail me.
A great machine with a great track record, they are very sturdy machines and idiot proof as far as the tape drive handling.

So in my opinion,one in GOOD operating condition is worth WELL over $175.00. I messed up and sold my first one years ago.
This one has a permanent home in my internet radio station from now on! AND yes you can still buy pancakes of good quality audio tape,take your 10" reels apart slap the pancake on and put the flange back on and your up and running. These machines are selling on Ebay at between $650.00 to $800.00. So though I think that's high,I think pricing one at $175.00 is Ludacris!

Ive always wanted to get into r2r ive heard them & all i can say is WOW sounded so good. But space is issue & other factors

I have a newer model Teac X-2000R that is a great performer but I can't do 15 ips. The A-3340 is a very nice machine. A few pics of my X-2000R with the blue LEDs installed by Ken Swauger and my refinished cabinet:

Nice Carl. The X-200R is a fantastic machine despite not being able to play at 15 ips. I've owned one since the mid 90's and have never had to do anything except replace the belt once, clean the heads after every play/record session and adjust the tension arms a couple times. IMO, it's one of the best consumer reel to reels ever made.
