Yesterday was the first day of my 10 or 14 week pArental leave! I have been looking forward to this, spending as much time with Noah and my wife. The best part is that I get paid 93% of my salary! My wife is off until April 2012 to be with him. Not sure what I will do except be the best dad I can be.

That is VERY cool. Is that something that your company does, or is it a Canadian benefit?

It's nice to see your little ones when they are newborn.

I worked just 10 minutes away over the 8 year period when my 4 were born, and came home almost every day for lunch to help out and enjoy.

But wow, I just don't see how 14 weeks off (that's 27% of a work year!) at 93% pay works from a business standpoint.

Thanks guys, I am really looking forward to it. I took 3 weeks off at his birth a combination of family related and vacation days. SO as for the 93%, Employment insurance covers 55% and working for the Fed. Gov our union has a plan where they top me up to equal 93% of my salary. Which actually I will be making more money cause I am only taxed on the top up portion which is less than my original salary. My take home will be more.

I am loving every minute of it even when he has his bouts of freak outs and crying times. I just think" it could be worse, I could be at work". If my wife worked for the gov. she could have taken the whole 12 months at 93%, or I could kick her back to work early (which I wont do) and I could take 35 weeks at 93%. We talked about it and it is best that I take time now and might take more in the spring of 2012.

    Enjoy!

I was only able to take 1 week of vacation when my daughter was born... It went WAY too fast.

Enjoy it all... My daughter in now almost 8 months old and I can't stand how fast she is developing. I feel like if I blink I might miss a "phase".

A lot of countries are that way with leave. America is not the norm with it's lack of vacation and such.

Enjoy the time off! How's the "Honey Do" list? I would think it's somewhat long.

Congrat's on the healthy birth, very nice situation you and the new Mom have, some people don't think newborns have a memory, but I think they do until lot's of other factors come into play later in life, then it gets pushed aside, a good loving foundation is always a great start

Do we get to see pics soon?

Enjoy it while it last, I don't think Canada will be to afford such luxury for too many years (heck, might be taking this from seniors pensions).

This is ALL Federal government paid!

Yes and no, we ALL have to pay for this sort of benefits as Canadians.

OK, now I see where the 93% comes from. ALL Canadian paid anyway. Might as well take advantage of it as it is there. Now, make sure you post some pics of the little one!
