This comes a little late due to computer issues.
Two weekends ago I attended a local music festival that spanned 3 days. I haven't been to a great outdoor event in a while and I was overtook by the entire atmosphere. Lots of great blues musicians with amazing headliners.
Day one: Grand Funk Railroad. I know little of their music, but despite the "mixed" reviews they got, I heard and saw one hell of a set. The crowd was in to the music and the band was in to the show much more than I had anticipated.
Day two: Buddy Guy. I have seen him a few times. Amazing musician, great showman, and when he talks to the crowd, he does so as if he was talking one-on-one to a friend. His performance was stellar. He played for about 30 minutes past the curfew. Security and organizers didn't give a hoot because they were all digging the show along with the crowd. He played a couple of songs from his new album. If you haven't heard 74 Years Young, check it out. It's a nice chill tune. I was right in front of the stage for this one and the SQ was surprisingly good. It's nice to see a live show where the audio tech's do it right isn't it?
Day three: Blue Rodeo. I haven't seen them live before, but will again. This band seems to LIVE for the stage. Not too much showmanship, but great music, extended solos with a "jam session" feel, and again, great SQ. They seem to have fun on stage and play to the entire crowd, not just people in the back row. I knew most of their big hits, but the few songs I didn't recognize were as brilliant as their big ones. This show definately made me think of saying this: To all my American friends (or random American people on the internet...) If you haven't heard, check out anything from the Blue Rodeo catalogue. There are gems in there that ANY music lover would love.
I have only been to outdoor concerts a few times, and haven't been to a concert of any kind in too long. This last weekend reminded me of the good times, great people, and fantastic music I have been missing out on. It's time to start seeing every show I can even if I have never heard of the band before. It's tough not to enjoy music in such a setting.
Unrelated: If you like a nice reggae influenced rock music, check out a Canadian band called Big Sugar. Their most recent album: Revolutions per Minute is pretty darn good (although all their stuff is good).
