looking for my first set up
hey Club Polk guys!
I am new to this forum and I have a lot of questions, since I am new to home audio too.
I want to get a A/V receiver, 2 fronts and a sub (the center and surround channels will come later this year). I have been looking at the Yamaha RX-V371 5.1-Channel AV Receiver or the Yamaha YMC-500BL NeoHD Media Controller 5.1 CH AV Receiver (for price mostly). For fronts Polk Audio Monitor40 Series II bookshelf and the Polk Audio PSW Series PSW10 for sub.
As you can see I do not want to go high end and my budget is arround 500 bucks. I want this set up for my bedroom (12*12*8 H) I like bass but I am far from a basshead. I rather have better fronts than a huge/powerfull sub. I want to improve the sound of my HD tv and watch movies/listen to music on a cool and clear setup.
Any suggestions, ideas? I know I may sound stupid but only by asking can I get to do the right thing.

anything better than your tv speakers its always a improvement , check out the deals on Newegg maybe you will see something better and improve your system and the PSW10 .... forget that .

thanks guys!
I forgot to mention I am in Mexico and buying a used receiver may be a huge gamble, but it sounds really nice if I can get a nice receiver.
I looked at newegg.com and I am going to purchase from them. Is there a decent reveiver I can get from them? I rather go to a solid 2.1 than messing around with el cheapo 5.1 stuff. I may be able so squeeze some extra cash for my set up.
So no PSW10 a PSW505 looks as a good option. -
Denon AVR-391. 5.1 receiver. 75wpc into 8 ohms. HDMI and even 3D ready if you ever decide to get into that game. $200.00 brand new. Good subs cost money. Just the way it is. Maybe you could find a deal used. Found Polk TSI 300 for 142.00 a piece from Vanns. That is almost $500.00 right there.

No PSW10.
The 40's are nice, I've used a pair for a couple of years as rears on my 5.1 system.
I'm a big Denon fan...haven't gone wrong yet.Home Theater

yep...love my Denon...I have a PSW110 that I like a lot, but I am sure there are better on the used market for the same money as my new one was..

thanks guys!
I will look into the Denon Receiver you mentioned; it sounds nice.
Shall I forget for a while of the sub and get a better pair of fronts? If that is the case, what shall I look into (from Polk of course, I love their sound) and does the Denon receiver pack enough power for whatever you recommend? -
well I just spoke to my land lady and as I have to pay for all the mods needed for the 5.1 system I am not interested anymore (basically I all I can do is drop wires on the floor). so 2.1 it is. I looked at the Harman/Kardon HK 3490 Stereo Receiver and I like it; can I get it to reproduce sound from my hd screen/dvd/br? hd screen has an audio optical output, so I think it is possible. What do you guys think?

I'm just going to throw this out there... Look at the polk RM6750 package.
I had it (about to set-it up again in the the bedroom)... others on here have it...
It's fantastic and you can't beat the price. I think the 5.1 package is now selling almost everywhere on the net for around 175. The speakers are really easy to mount with mounts that you can buy for $5 a pop on monoprice.
Anyhow, read the user reviews on polk and amazon... it will shock you with it's quality of sound.
just my 2 cents. -
Sherwood makes a decent product at a great price. Had a Sherwood AVR for years. Only switched to get HD Master Audio, HDMI and all that.

thanks for all the support. I think I will save some more money and get a nice 2.0 or 2.1 set up (mid level) in the near future. Any suggestions?
