I'm looking for some big, nasty speakers to blast in my garage. My Sansui bookshelves with 8" woofers just ain't cutting it no more. I need something crazy with 12 to 15 inch woofers. Sound quantity over quality... Something that someone will take one look at and think, what the %#&?!!! Something garage-worthy!

Suggestions?

Here ya go! Anything Cerwin Vega with the big 15" woofer in them is more than up to the task. Two 15's is even better!

I don't know if you can find a pair of Polk Monitor 12's (not the ones with the top hat x-over) circa 1990. I always thought the quad driver array looked rather impressive.

Make your own. That way, they can be big and nasty as you want. I'm sure you can come up with an awesome design since sound quality doesn't seem to matter!!!! Rock on,Wayne.

What I want to find is a Goodwill/Craigslist/yard sale score... To resurrect some beasts the someone no longer wants. For not much more than $100. Cabinet condition wouldn't matter a whole lot. A few dings would add character! Something old that screams 1979 or so...

BIC America makes a speaker with a big ol' red 15" woofer. Cone mid and cone tweet. Looks pretty retro and not too expensive.

    RTR-1530 $98.00 each on Amazon

Yes, they are cool! I like this:
In fact, RtR guarantees bass output of the 1530 will surpass the bass output of comparably priced Cerwin Vega, JBL, or DCM models!

However, got my eyes on some Monitor 10s at the moment...

The monitor 12s do look nice. The are some in Richmond (http://richmond.craigslist.org/ele/2485801801.html). Not sure about the price. If I had room, I would be tempted.

Found some early Monitor 10s for $100. May go check them out later. I'm sure they'd sound great, but not so sure they have the look... Maybe with the grills off.

Don't think 10s are quite what you're looking for, but they are incredible speakers. Check out the vintage section of this forum.

The default quantity over quality speaker would have to be Cerwin-Vega. The ones linked in post #7 would fit the bill quite nice and would have no issues getting the cops there without an invitation.

I have a decent pair of Infinity Reference 3 Monitors w/ original boxes. 8" woofer, 5" midrange, 1" Polycell tweeter....perfect dude, and I'm close.

Oh just read that a bit closer....hmmm, yeah that CV suggestion is tough to beat.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Why half-**** it? He needs at least an 18" woofer:

Gotta love a speaker that gets reviews like these!!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:
The VS-120 Cerwin Vega Speakers are fantastic. No matter what kind of music that you listen to.
im class of 92 i think i got my vs120 around 1990 an i have abused them all the way up to wrapping the fuses in aluminum foil right after i got them an they are here in my floor today.matter of fact today i was home alone an abused them somemore they are still amazing never had no warranty claims or replaced anything on them they are bullet proof i think.an when i say abused i mean it tourtured for yrs. yall get the pic
I bought these for about $100 and they sound a $1000 more expensive! They are durable but i did have to upgrade the fuse to 3.0A from 2.5A cause i kept blowing my fuse. i love them they shake my whole house! I was skeptical cause they are kinda old but damn these things sound brand new!

THESE ARE A MUST HAVE FOR ANYONE WHO JAMS!

Ok, so I've still got my eyes open for something unique and cool, but as I've been building the shelves in my garage where these yet-to-be-acquired speakers will go, I've decided to limit myself to speakers that will fit between two shelves that are 32" apart (max height for a speaker)...

So, perhaps the Monitor 10 isn't such a bad idea, although not quite what I had in mind when I said "monsters" (and not really very unique)...
    Perhaps little monsters...

I have, however, run across some vintage Yamaha stereo integrated receivers that just might find a home in my garage to power whatever I end up with.

not to be the 15th comedian to chime in here but on e-bay from time to they have Cervin Vegas and if that's still to small there are a couple of Electro-Voice VOT systems out there. Now if your garage was the size of some estastes you can have the Stones playing on one end and the wife could have a tea party on the other.....(lol,lol,lol)
