Tube Question

So, my Onix SP3 Mkii tube integrated finally came in. Problem is, instead of shipping the two Electro Harmonix 6922's as promised, I got their boxes with a Melody 12AX7 in one and in the other a tube with no markings (which I'm assuming is a Electro 6922). I don't know if the seller used these in the 6922 position, but I have them in and can't hear anything weird going on.
Am I safe right now?
Here is the manual: http://onix.pbworks.com/w/page/7224976/SP3

I left the amp running for a few hours with the 12AX7 in the 6922 and the unmarked tube in the other 6922 while I went to a birthday party. I came back and the thing is HOT. Being so new to anything tube I don't know if this is normal or not. I can't hear anything horrible but their is a light buzz when I turn the volume all the way down.

You can't run a 12 series tube in that socket, or vice versa. You have a mismatched pair and a wrong box. I'd remove them for now and order a matched 6922/6DJ8 pair ASAP.

Don't run that IA until you get the right tubes installed. Bad idea to do that w/o knowing what your doing.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Dammit. The seller said I was all good to go so knowing nothing about tubes I assumed the tubes in the boxes marked "6922" were okay. Did I damage anything? I left it running for about 2 hours. -
No, I'm sure you would have came home to a fire if you damaged something.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

It was running ridiculously hot. Is this normal for tube amps? -
That integrated uses 2 6922, 2 12AU7 and 2 12AX7...and it wouldn't work correctly if you didn't, so I believe you have the right tubes per se. I would suggest you order a matched pair of each type and ditch the old ones.
You may have been using the wrong 12 series tube, which changes plate voltage, and almost blew up your amp. The 12 series is changeable but it depends on the circuit design. Dude, you just don't do that and don't use tubes that you cannot identify. At least come here and ask if you have questions.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? This is what he gave me (except he sent the right boxes and the wrong tubes for the 6922's) and he said they have less than a 100 hours on them.

2x Electro Harmonix 6922 (WRONGO)

Dude, you're totally right but the guy made a huge mistake and sent the wrong tubes in the RIGHT boxes  A tube newb like me trusted that this guy who happens to own a friggin' audio store knew what he was doing.
I really hope nothing got jacked up. -
I'd leave all of that up to suspect at this point and order new ones. No, that's not normal but make sure you used the 12 series in the correct socket. I believe the 100 hour statement as BS and would suggest you start your own hour record. PPL lie about hours on tubes all the time.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Any suggestions on budget tubes to get me started for all positions? -
Not really as far as a budget tube since they all sound pretty close in the cheap stages. I'd suggest getting matched pairs of EH/JJ/Mullard(New) or Sovtek for the 12 series and a nice matched pair of 6922 NOS JAN Sylvania, Genelex or Black Sable.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Those are 'spensive :eek::eek:
Is their anything in the $20 range for a pair of 6922's? -
Sure, just use the other brands as a reference.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Drcilantro has genalex reissue 6922's for sale for a reasonable price. I just upgraded the stock 6922's in my preamp with the genalex's and am enjoying them. Detail has improved significantly. There are more vintage tubes that are better but they are also a lot more expensive.____________________________________________________________
