I've been wanting an Onkyo 70x or 80x for some time and have been pretty close to picking up one several times this year so far. The bad construction and reported failures have scared me off.

Can I be pointed into another direction please?
Hdmi to my TV, Polk M 70s, CS2, PSW505 for now.

Why worries if purchasing new always includes manufacturer warranty, in the Onkyo case, a 2-year period covering both parts and labor?

I second the Elite as well, if you're worried about the Onkyo burning out!

I have a 3 or 4 year old TX-SR805 that's, knock on wood, still going strong. Like it a lot! But it does get hot in the summer, especially! Too hot to touch even though there is over 18" of space above it?

Get a nice Pioneer Elite with pre-outs, whatever you can afford! Recent Denons have also had some QC problems!

I have a Yamaha ,but agree others here on the Pio Elite, continue to hear great results about the MCACC circuitry. Kinda wish Pio Elite would make a nice high end pre/pro with it.

I have an onkyo 505 that I haven't had any issues with. However, I did buy a 707 used that came to me with overheating issues and promptly went back. so 50-50 for me on the onkyos. I used to run a Yamaha 565 that ran my monitor 70/50/cs2 without any issues.

Running a Marantz right now that I love but a bit different as far as pricing goes.

I am with pioneer , but if you really like onkyo , take a look at Integra but be ready to pay the price

Eh, not sure I would do that. I have an Integra and it still had problems like the Onkyo's.

Only difference is the components are "hand selected" and have 1 more year of a warranty. Not sure of any other differences.

Integra is their "high end brand" and while I like it, I coulda saved a bundle by going w/ the Onkyo version of what I have.

Personally right now would go with the PIO ICE AVR's for their measured wattage w/ all channels driven. Not sure a Integra of similar spec's would measure the same (but dont know that for sure)

My plug for Denon - among the few receivers I've played w/ (2 Yamahas, 2 Onkyos), my Denon 3311ci has been my favorite. Airplay, pre-outs, audyssey xt, PLIIz, hdmi 1.4, FLAC support, network, etc. all works great, and Denon updates the firmware pretty regularly. And no reboots, freezes, or bugs in the year I've had it.

    Ditto on that

Sure my 3008 runs warm but I've got a couple case fans on the job and all is well. For the money, the deals on the 3008 from last year are a steal in my opinion. The XT32 alone makes it awesome, but when you've got 4 transformers in there it pumps out some great sound.

This is my 2nd Onkyo with no problems. I bought from Accessories4less for a good discount and warrenty. You get what you pay for, of course if you spend more you'll get a better AVR. For the price i think Onkyo makes a good unit.

I also went with the Pioneer Elite SC-35 this year and its been great so far. I replaced a Denon Avr-888 that I also like, and will use in another room setup. I was also considering an Onkyo around the same time I bought the Elite, but felt the Ice Amps were more efficient and cooler running so I went with the Pioneer. This site also helped me make up my mind in favour of the SC-35, with all the great reviews and recommendations. A new SC-35 is going for $749 now at Costco.

You guys don't know what heat is until you get a tube amp or a top notch SS amp with a heavy Class A bias or a pure Class A amp.
