Garmin map updates...this may help

If some of you, like me, are have difficulty uploading a new map to your Garmin, here's some tips that might help.
If you have a Nuvi 2XX, 3XX--or other Garmin with minimal memory (I have a 255) I had to do the following to get the 2012 map to download:
1. Connect your Garmin via usb to your computer. Make sure you have the latest firmware first.
2. Locate the /garmin directory and the gmapprom.img file on the Garmin device.
3. Copy gmapprom.img to your desktop--this will take awhile, it's over a gig.
4. Once you've verified it's completely copied, delete it from your garmin device. This will give you the necessary space to download the new map.
5. Download the new map; be prepared for this to take hours, depending on your connection speed. I have cable internet (and it's VERY fast), and it took abount an hour. It then takes about another hour to install the map on your Garmin.
I realize there are more high-tech ways to accomplish the same, this is the common "joe blow" method, not downloading to a microSD card---blah, blah, blah....
Many, many people have been struggling with map updates, I finally got my issues ironed out.
You can also free space on your Garmin by first backing up to your computer, then deleting:
1. Voices you don't need
2. Text files for "help" in languages you don't need
3. Help files for all languages other than english
4. The goofy jpegs included if you don't use them
5. Vehicle icons you don't use
This alone netted me about 350MB of re-couped memory--which is significant when you only have 2.5 gig. (I know comp nerds, memory isn't to be confused with "storage" but in the case of electronic memory (chips--not a HDD)--it is.

So, dumb question. But this method is NOT for those of us, me, that are too cheap to pay for the upgraded maps correct? I have a Nuvi and damn sure didn't realize you had that grace period after purchase to get a FREE map update, and now its ran out.--Gary--

You can either pay for it/download it or find it on the torrents.
